Before I respond, I hear a crash and yelling below my window.Throwing it open, I look down and see Kaidon wailing on someone.When he jumps up, I see that the crumpled man is Topher.Right then, a couple of police officers step into the backyard, guns drawn, yelling at Kaidon.
Instinct taking over, I burst out of the door and down the stairs.Running out the back door, I find the cops putting both Kaidon and Topher in handcuffs.
“He is my bodyguard!”I shout, pointing at the minotaur.“He was protecting me!”
As I’m yelling, two more cops show up and talk with their colleagues.Kaidon greets one of them, who he seems to be friendly with.Looking up at me, he gestures his horns to the front of the house.
“It’ll get worked out, Val.Do you mind checking on Herbie out front?He was knocked out.”
I nod and then walk to the front when I hear one cop say, “Medics are with him now, Kaidon.”
I find the shifter sitting on the porch steps, being looked over by paramedics.
“I swear I’m fine, guys.”He grumbles.
“Please let them do their jobs.Was it Topher who knocked you out?I feel awful.”
“Don’t, ma’am.I can’t believe I got bum-rushed by him.”
I go inside to grab him a water bottle and come out to find Kaidon, no longer cuffed, checking on Herbie.
“I want you to take the rest of the week off.Got it?”
“Boss, I’m fine.I swear.”
“I don’t care.You deserve a break.”
Behind him, I watch the police officers guide Topher to one of the cop cars.The one who seemed to know Kaidon walks up to us.
“Hey, thanks for helping out back there, Lamont.”
“No problem, buddy.I just need to take a statement from all three of you, if that’s alright.”
“Go for it.”
By the timeLamont is finished interviewing us, Herbie heads home and I stand in Kaidon’s living room watching him walk the cop out, wondering if I am spending the night or should I just head home as well.It’s close to midnight now.
Shutting the front door, Kaidon looks at me in a way that turns my insides into jello.With a fire in his purple eyes, he bounds a few long strides and takes my face into his powerful hands.
“I never want harm to come to you, ever.”He says gruffly, studying my lips.
“Well, I never want harm to come to you, either.”
The minotaur laughs and then picks me up, placing me on the steps so that I am closer to his height.My body is alive with electric sparks and I lunge for his full lips, devouring them with my own.Kaidon lifts me and I wrap my bare legs around his waist as he carries me up to the second floor.
“Take me to your bed,” I breathe into his mouth.
