“Oh.” It was all I could get out. My mind was racing through this scenario that I had gotten myself into.

“Yeah, this storm picked up speed pretty fast last night and has just gotten worse this morning.”

“When I let Eugene out, I could see it was snowing pretty hard, but I guess I didn’t realize it had been going on that long.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, you were pretty out of it last night when I put you to bed. You woke up enough when the doctor stopped by to mumble at him—he said you’ll be fine, by the way—and then immediately zonked back out.”

I huffed a laugh. “I don’t even remember that. And hey, thanks for letting me sleep in your bed. I would have been fine on the couch.”

“I wasn’t going to make you sleep on the couch.”

I just nodded, trying to wrap my head around the fact that I was stuck in Knox’s cottage. I didn’t dislike the idea, and that’s what made me feel guilty. I liked the thought of being stuck with him, just the two of us, with nothing to do but be together.

“What do you have there?” I pointed to the bag.

“Oh, I went to get some food for breakfast. Sorry it took so long and I wasn’t here when you woke up.”

“You walked through a blizzard to get food?”

“Yeah? It’s not a big deal.” He waved me off.

“I went through your refrigerator to find a drink and it looked like you had plenty of stuff to eat. What did you need from the palace that was worth walking through a blizzard to get?”

He turned his back to me to face the counter and avoid my gaze as he unpacked the bag.

“Knox?” I laughed. “What did you go and get?” I walked around the small kitchen island and stood by him, getting on my tiptoes to see what he was pulling out of the bag. There was already a pack of six eggs on the counter sitting next to bacon wrapped in parchment paper.

“What else is in there?” I hip-bumped him out of the way and pushed my way to the bag. There was a block of cheddar cheese, cream cheese, apples, grapes, a bag of chips, popcorn, pastries, sausage, and four bagels.

I looked at Knox. “Did you get stuff to make breakfast sandwiches?”

He shrugged his shoulders and gave a soft, “Yeah.”

I was speechless that this gummy bear of a man had walked through a fucking snowstorm to get stuff to make me a breakfast sandwich, even though he hated them. I had never had a man do something like that for me before.

“Thank you.” I give him another hip bump.

“Did you find everything you needed in the bathroom?” he asked, still not looking at me as he laid out the ingredients for the sandwich on the counter.

“I did.” I smiled. “And can we talk about your bathroom? What the fuck!” I laughed. “Who would have guessed that Knox the lumberjack was so bougie?”

He looked over his shoulder and gave me that panty-melting half smile.

“I’m assuming you liked the towel warmer and heated floor?”

“Not to mention the high-tech shower with the jets that hit all the right places.”

That made him turn his whole body to face me. He cocked his eyebrow. “What kind of places?”

“You know, my back and neck, and…Oh do you have coffee by chance?” I quickly changed the subject.

“I do.” He looked me over again before turning his back to me and lighting the gas stovetop. “It’s on the bar over there.” He pointed the spatula behind his back.

I turned around and spotted a refurbished buffet that was set up as a bar and coffee station. The carafe already had hot coffee waiting in it. I grabbed a mug from the floating shelf above it and filled it to the brim.

“Can I help you with anything?” I asked.

Knox had done so much for me in the last twelve hours that I wanted to do something for him. I filled another mug with black coffee and took it to him at the stovetop.
