“She has a massive lump on the back of her head. She needs medical attention. We’ll cooperate with your questions, but then you need to let us go, so we can go to the hospital.”
“We’ll make this quick,” said Officer Park.
“What kind of car did he drive?” said Andrew.
“A black Audi,” I said.“Normally he drives a red Corvette.”
Andrew received the text and held it up for his partner to read.
“Where did you get out of the trunk?”
“11th and Mill. Check the traffic cams. He left the car to chase me.”
“Did he say where he was taking you?”
I shook my head.
“Did he say what he wanted?”
“That we belonged together. Said he was saving me from that asshole.”I looked at Christopher. He winked.
“Did you know this man before your first encounter in June 2017?”
I appreciated his careful wording that used the year.
I shook my head.
“Since that time, have you spoken to Mr. Dahl, dated him, or given him any encouragement regarding your relationship?”
I shook my head.
“Do you believe he is the same person who broke into your house in November?”
I nodded. It annoyed me I had to repeat this, but understood that it was standard procedure. Officer Park wrote everything in a notebook.
“Is there anything else you’d like to add for the record?”
I whispered into Christopher’s ear, “I want him stopped so I can sleep again.”
“She wants him arrested so she can sleep again.”
“Can you show me the emergency exit and where the car was parked?” said Andrew.
Christopher’s eyebrows shot up his forehead. “Do you see the condition of her feet?” His voice was loud, almost yelling. He was a hair away from an explosion. Some of his anger was because of his worry for me. He directed the rest at Eric.
I put a hand on his arm.
“Carry me. I’ll do it.”
Christopher scooped me into his arms and I threw an arm around his shoulders.
Andrew’s partner jumped to the door and held it open. Across the hall was the Emergency Exit, and I pointed. My broken and discarded shoes lay on the floor by the wall. Andrew picked them up and handed them to Officer Park. He put on gloves and we went outside. I pointed to the wall and touched the back of my head. Andrew felt the lump.
“Elizabeth,” he said, his voice ragged.
This wasn’t Officer Jennings speaking—for a moment, it was Andrew.
“I’m so sorry. We thought we were helping. Your sister will be a wreck when she hears. She’ll want to apologize.”
