Chapter Twenty

––––––––

“HERE WE GO,” ZOE SAIDin anticipation when she heard the static on the ham radio stutter. The Mad Prophet gave his latest prediction that was a warning to the new knight and cambion duo.

“They’re going to be heading to Manhattan soon,” Amaros said, pleased by the news.“Fate is adept at dropping hints for my men to follow.”

“Let’s just hope the warrior is smart enough to pick up on them,” Tori joked.

They’d all rushed to the great room the moment Zoe had gotten a hunch they were about to receive a message.

“I want to try something,” Wynter said in a casual tone.“I’ll be out the front of the base for a while.”

“What are you up to, Wyn?”Zo asked suspiciously.

“It’s a surprise,” the water wielder said mysteriously.“No peeking!”she warned them, including her own mate in her mock glare.

“Do you need any help?”Grace asked hopefully.

“I’ve got it, short stuff,” Wynter said. The kid’s face instantly fell, making her feel bad.“How good is your imagination?”she asked, relenting straight away.

“It’s awesome!”Grace said, perking up immediately.“I’ve read hundreds of books.I’m sure I can help you with whatever your plan is!”

“Let’s go, kiddo,” Wyn said, then pointed at the others.“Don’t come outside until we tell you to!”she said to the others.

“I won’t let anyone ruin your surprise, beloved,” Tolas vowed.

“This is so exciting,” Grace said, skipping alongside the redhead.“Thanks for including me in your surprise.”

“Don’t thank me yet,” Wynter said ruefully.“It could turn out to be a complete disaster.”

“What’s she up to, Zo?”Qi asked as they watched the females hurry towards the front entrance.

“I have no idea,” the mystic replied.

“Let’s get back to training,” Vic ordered.“I want to watch Xan throw her knives at the ceiling again. That never gets old.”

“Shut up!”the genius of their family groaned in embarrassment.“I’m a lover, not a fighter.”

“My mate speaks the truth,” Semiaza agreed with a wink at his female.“Xanthia is an excellent lover.”

“Ew!”Grace called out as Wynter slid the makeshift front door open.“We don’t need to hear the gory details!”

The females snickered and allowed Victoria to herd them back to their training room.Amaros and the rest of his squad resumed training in their larger room further along the hallway.

Wyn slid the door back into place, then turned to examine the open area in front of their base. The snowdrifts were taller than she was.Their driveway was completely hidden beneath the thick white blanket. The trucks were safely tucked beneath tarps under the trees next to the north wing.

“What’s your plan?”Grace asked, shoving her hands into gloves. They’d stopped in the mudroom to pull on long thermal winter coats and snow boots.

“I’m going to build an ice castle,” Wynter whispered.“I just need some inspiration.”

Grace clapped her hands in glee.“I know exactly what it should look like!”she exclaimed quietly, then gave her new friend a detailed description.
