And just like that, the anger I’d been holding onto all evening loosens its grip.

“Okay,” I say slowly. “I can’t tell what you’re thinking.”
It’s true. I’ve known this woman nearly ten years, and I still can’t always read her.
She smiles to herself and slides under the covers on her side of the bed. “Okay.”
“Okay…?” I repeat.
“Okay, I’ll come back,” she says, doing that twisty maneuver and pulling her bra out through her sleeve like some kind of magician.
She keeps talking, but all the blood in my body seems to rush south.
“…set up that daycare?”
“What?” I ask, blinking back into reality.
Jess tilts her head. “Really? Again?”
“What?” I repeat innocently. “I’ve been gone a week. Plus,” I add, leaning in to kiss her cheek, “you’re sexy when you’re mad.”
“Uh huh,” she says. “You were gone five days.”
I trail kisses down her neck. “Felt like a week.”
I nip lightly at her collarbone.
She giggles and falls back against the bed, tugging me down with her.
I pull back just enough to look at her. “Really?”
She shrugs. “Well, you said I’m sexy.”
Not one to argue with a gift like that, I lean down again, thinking I should definitely take more trips.
The next morning, there’s an extra bounce in my step as I flip pancakes at the stove.
“Stop,” Jess laughs from the doorway.
“What?” I say, turning around with the spatula still in my hand.
She just shakes her head, smiling.
I slide a plate over to her. “So… do you want to drop the kids off and go together?”
She cuts into her pancakes. “Today?”
I tilt my head. “Yeah. Why not?”
She presses her lips together. “Can I just come in? Don’t we have to… I don’t know. Tell people?”
“Tell who?” I ask. “We’re the owners. I’m the boss.” I shrug. “You can come in for a half day today. Then after school, we’ll bring the kids by and show them around.”
She nods slowly. “That’s actually a good idea.”
“Good,” I say, flipping another pancake.
