An hour later, while the kids are playing outside, I sit at the breakfast bar with a cup of coffee, not really able to see anything, every memory of Aunt Lyra flashing through my mind.
She was my biggest cheerleader, always there when I needed her and now, because of my own mother, I didn’t get to see her before she died.
I don’t think I have ever hated my mother as much as I do right now, even after she disowned me.
I sniffle and wipe as away a stray tear as a knock on the door echoes, and I furrow my brows knowing it can’t be anyone for me.
Today isn’t going very well as it is, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it were Matty’s stalker girlfriend.
Sighing, I check outside the kitchen window to ensure the kids are alright as another knock echoes and I walk out of the kitchen and towards the front door before opening it, ready to tell the woman to have some dignity but instead my mouth parts as twopolice officers and Cheryl dressed similar as she was the last time I saw, stand before me.
“That is her officers, she’s the one who stole my son!” Cheryl accuses, and my eyes widen.
What the hell?
“Miss, you are under arrest for the accusations of kidnapping Caleb Lee. Please turn around,” the taller man says sternly, not actually reading the correct Miranda rights.
I choke, “You are not arresting me! I’m watching him until his dad gets back, that woman is crazy and you didn’t even read me the correct rights!”
Cheryl smirks before she cries, “Where is my son?! You kidnapped my son!”
This cannot be happening.
“Miss, turn around,” the taller one commands, and I shake my head as I grab my phone from my pocket, and the man growls, “Are you resisting arrest?”
“No, I'm calling Ice, you know, Caleb's grandfather and also a member of the Rebels MC,” I snap, my anger showing, and Cheryl narrows her eyes and demands, “What are you waiting for? She’s holding my son hostage!”
Oh, great, so I’ve gone from a kidnapper to suddenly holding the kid hostage, awesome.
I press on Ice’s number, putting the phone on loudspeaker just as I hear, “What’s going –”
Ice’s words are cut off as Cheryl gasps, “My baby!” as she rushes past me, shoving me into the door.
I grunt at the impact just as Caleb shakes his head and tries to run away from her, but he isn’t quick enough. She wraps her arms around him, and he shouts, “No, get off me, Holly, help!”
“What the fuck?” Ice answers.
“I need you to come to my place, and now, Cheryl is having me arrested for kidnapping Caleb,” I state, and he curses, causing the men to wince and take a step back.
Law enforcement, my ass.
“No, get off me!” Caleb shouts and shoves Cheryl away from him, and he rushes over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist while my daughter watches from the kitchen door in shock, tears streaming down her face, and that does it.
“Get out!” I demand of Cheryl, who sneers, “Not without my son!”
“You are trespassing. Get out of my home right now, or so help me god,” I threaten and I look at the officers and snap, “I have two kids on this property. Two very upset kids. While she makes a scene, you both stand there, letting it happen. Why? Because she said I kidnapped a childIteach?” The taller man's eyes widen, and I scoff, “Get that woman out of my house right now!” Several pipes rumble in the distance, and the shorter one sighs, “I told you to let me call Doc to get the facts before coming here on her word. We went to school together.”
The taller one winces just as Ice stops near my car, climbs off his bike, and rushes over to me with face like thunder.
“Grandpa,” Caleb cries and rushes over to him just as Lyra takes Caleb’s place, her arms around my hips.
“Mads,” Doc says as he walks over with a scowl, then looks at the taller man who winces again as Doc growls, “Chairs.”
Wait, seriously, Chairs?
“Doc,” he says, “what can we do for you? Because you know I’ll have to take you in if you…”
