Miles smiles and gives her a hug back. “No one better to have around, right?”

“No one,” she agrees and looks to me. “Now when are you going to ask my girl to be your girlfriend? Y’all are practically dating already and I want a son in law.”

Miles and Wren erupt into laughter.

“Don’t you worry,Mom, that’s the plan. I just wanted to get your approval first but it seems like it’s a pretty solid yes.”

“Hell you can marry her right now if you want to. You have my permission.” She laughs.

“One day I promise to marry her but for now I need her to agree to date me first.”

“Oh don’t worry about that, she’s head over heels for you.” Wren rolls her eyes. “It’s sickening.”

“I’ll let you two be but please order whatever you’d like, it’s on us today.” Elaine wipes away the last of her tears. “It’s a congratulations and a welcome to the family to you both!”

“You heard the lady, whatever you want!” Wren pulls out her notepad to take down our orders.

“Wait, before that, can I get your advice?”

“Is it about blondie?”

I snort. “Yes. I have an idea…”

And that’s how Wren, Miles, and I spend the next hour conducting a plan to ask Maisie to be my girlfriend.

MAISIE

“Did you get laid last night?” I ask a very smiley Wren as we drive back to my house. She’s been a bit too giddy and happy in the driver's seat which is very unlike her.

“Ugh, I wish.” She sighs in response but with a smile still plastered on her face.

“Why are you so… weirdly happy then?” I look over and she’s tapping her hands on the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing on the radio.

“Can I not be happy I got to spend the day with my best friend?” She reaches a hand over and pokes my cheek.

“You do realize that we see each other nearly everyday, right?” We turn into my driveway and I notice I left my kitchen light on which is unusual. Clearly, this whole ‘Henry is leaving soon’ thing is messing with me more than I expected.

“Would you look at that? We’re home!” She puts the car in park and smiles at me so wide it’s almost frightening. “I’ll text you when I’m home, bye!” She unbucklesmyseatbelt and practically pushes me out of the car.

“You’re being weird, maybe youshouldget laid.” I squint to see if there’s any break in her smile and even when she yellsanother goodbye and drives off, I can still feel her grinning at me.

Bizarre.

I unlock the door, still concerned that I didn’t turn off the kitchen light. I really need to get myself together, stop letting the guy I’ve fallen in love with take up every square inch of my mind.

Henry and I can still be friends even if I spend the rest of my life wishing we could be together, wishing that?—

Opening my front door, I stop abruptly and see Henry sitting on my living room couch—pancakes, whipped cream, and cherries sitting on my coffee table.

“Henry,” I whisper and stare dumbfounded at him from the doorway. I’m confused but also relieved to see him. “What are you doing here? How did you get in?”

He stands and makes his way to me but my own two feet are glued to the floor. He looks just as stunning as the first day I saw him.

He doesn’t say anything when he towers in front of me, taking my head in his hands and kissing me like he’s savoring this moment before it’s gone.

What if thisisthe last time…
