“Do you know where she is?” Roman steps up, asking the question that is the most important at the moment.
“I do. There’s a coded gate to get into the place. I managed to see it all before shit went sideways.”
“Give it to us. I need to know how many are headed there and if they are armed.” Roman’s face has morphed into the cold exterior he uses in the cages.
“Two. They are both alphas. I was meant to be their beta. But what they plan to do, I don’t want any part of that.” He's still stunned, and I feel bad for him, but I did warn him. A part of me is glad he didn’t, or we wouldn’t know she needed our help.
Roman disappears up the stairs, returning five minutes later with a bag in hand. “Let’s go,” he orders.
Chapter 33
Josh
“The pack should’ve been there by now, has Torin called either of you?” I ask, an unsettling heaviness taking hold in my chest.
“No,” Callux says, as Tav shakes his head, focused on finishing disposing of the bodies. Normally, we would’ve taken them to Gerts, a little extra snack for her pigs, but she’s too far out for us to travel right now. So burying it is. We made sure that their bodies were disfigured beyond recognition, fingers and teeth removed. This isn’t our first rodeo. Before Gert, this was our normal.
“Call him,” Tav orders.
We didn’t want to call and distract him if he was busy with the pack, and getting them to River, but as the minutes clicked past the time that they should’ve been there, worry had set in. The phone rings, but there’s no answer, and eventually the voicemail kicks in.
“How long has it been since we last talked to him?” Tav questions.
“An hour at least,” Callux answers. “I don’t like this. Something feels off.”
“Fucking hell. Try him again. Keep calling.” He barks as he tosses the last bit of dirt back into the hole. “Let’s go.”
We grab the shovels and tarps from the ground and rush to the Hummer, tossing everything into the back. We’ll get everything cleaned later. Right now we need to get to River and Torin.
“How far away are we?” Callux asks, getting in the rear passenger seat, slamming the door. He’s pissed that they were there alone, especially after he fought so hard for one of us to be with them. In hindsight, we fucked up not doing that. Two omegas alone, one in heat with a pack of alphas arriving. Fucking dumb idea. We will all be kicking ourselves in the ass later for this. But now we need to find out what the fuck is going on.
“Forty-five minutes maybe, but we’re going to be there in less time,” Tav announces, starting up the car.
This time when I call, it immediately clicks over to the Bluetooth, and the ringing comes through the speaker.
Voicemail.
Fuck! This isn’t good.
“Can you get into the cameras from your phone?” Callux moves to the center of the back seat, leaning his upper body forward between the front seats.
“Stupid question and genius at the same time.” Why didn’t I think about doing that?
I open the app on my phone, keying in the password, to get access to the live streams. First, I check the outside camera and see a car parked in the driveway. It doesn’t register as one that the pack was noted as having.
“Car in the yard, but not the one we had listed.”
“Maybe theirs broke down. They had to have the code to get in.” Tav tries to remain calm, even though this doesn’t makemy unease about the situation feel any better. “Check the ones inside the house.”
I switch the camera, checking the bedroom Torin would be in first, but it’s empty. From where the camera is angled, I can see he has the camera feed up on his laptop as well. So he was there at some point. A mug sits on a coaster beside it, and a plate with a half-eaten muffin.
Callux leans further in, his breath dancing along my neck.
“He was there at one point. Keep looking.”
The next feed is the kitchen, empty as well. As much as I want to jump to the one in the nest, I don’t. If this turns out to be nothing, I don’t want to have violated River’s privacy. When I move to the one in the living room, something on the floor catches my attention. “What the fuck is that?”
“Zoom in,” Callux growls.
