God, what a mess!
How would she tell Ryan she no longer wanted to date him? It wasn’t in her to be blunt. It wasn’t in her to hurt his feelings, and she didn’t want their workplace environment to become awkward.
And what about Shane’s social media? Had he taken down the photos of them together?
She should take a look as soon as she was able to, but really, she didn’t have the strength right now to deal with the crap people posted online.
Truth was, no one but her and Shane would ever know how they’d explored every naked inch of each other’s bodies. No one would ever know they’d made love in the wilderness, amongst the trees and under the stars. All that passion, dissipated into the wild, gone forever. So much for everlasting love. So much for romance. It was just sex. Casual, doesn’t mean a thingsex.
And now what?
As the plane landed at YVR, Krista unclipped her belt, retrieved her bags, and drifted with the hordes out of the airport, chewing over that same question. Now what?
What was next for Krista Gervais?
Of course, she’d run into Shane at the center. He’d catch her using the men’s washrooms again, or spilling gel on the floor, or shouting at one of Lisa’s ex-hook ups across the parking lot. And there’d be no trace of that Rocky Mountain heat that had once glowed between them.
He’d put that fire out when he’d dumped her bags at her feet.
“...then Mom told me she missed her therapy session,” Ryan said beside her. They were on the Skytrain now, alone. They’d said goodbye to the rest of their group at the airport and had started the last part of their exceedingly long journey home. Ryan would get off at Olympic Village, and Krista would carry on to Yaletown. The minutes ticked by. “Tomorrow, I’m going with her to make sure she attends.”
Krista went back to staring out of the window.
“Krista?”
“Hmm?”
“Are you okay? You don’t seem yourself.”
Because she wasn’t hanging on his every word and offering endless advice and support over the latest drama with his mother?
Irritation spiked. “What did Zoey have to say about your mom?” She speared him with a knowing look.
Ryan’s face fell—not in a guilty,I’ve been bustedway, but more a,Shit, I really screwed upkinda way. “Kris, I—”
“I saw you kissing in the hotel gardens.”
“I’m sorry.” As he dragged his fingers into the thick waves of his hair, his perfectly manicured eyebrows knitted together. “I was going to tell you. I just didn’t know how.”
She snorted and went back to looking out of the window.
“I figured that’s why you went with Shane, but you didn’t say anything, so I—”
“Forget it.”
“She doesn’t mean anything to me.”
“It’s fine,” she snapped in a way that said it wasn’t fine at all.
But Krista didn’t want to have this conversation now. She was too tired, too angry. And too frickin’ confused by how little she cared about Ryan and Zoey. Such a change of heart shocked her. How could her feelings for Ryan fade so quickly? If she blew hot, cold, and indifferent like this, how could she ever trust her feelings for a man ever again?
But right now, she was too raw from Shane telling her to hit the road to care about anything. With a heavy sigh, she leaned her head back and hoped Ryan would get the message that she didn’t want to talk.
No such luck.
“You’re upset with me,” he said.
“No, I’m not.”I’m upset with Shane.
