Because really, it could go either way with Shane. He was so hard to read sometimes. So hard to really see into his soul, which he didn’t bare very often. And if he ever did give her a glimmer of what he was feeling inside—like the other night at the hot springs—he’d close up and move on too quickly for her to properly figure out what was going on.
Second-guessing how he felt about her was near on impossible. He could say,Yeah, sure, let’s see where this thing goes, or he could blow her off with a,Well, you see Krista, I’m kinda busy and this holiday was nice n’ all...but, no thanks. It’s over.
If that would be his answer, how could she then spend the night with him in this dark camping ground? Or sit in a car for two hours with him as he drove her back to Banff?
After all, Shane was a guy who’d been jilted at the altar. He’d been lied to and betrayed.Once bitten, twice shy. She could understand why his shell had hardened.
But was this connection they had—that sparked and sizzled and madeherfeel like she’d known him forever—enough to bring him out of that shell?
Chapter 20
The next morning, atthe service station just off the Icefields Parkway, Krista sipped her coffee, admiring Shane’s physique as he walked away to check on the car. Last night, when they’d made love and touched each other in all the right places, in all the right ways, Krista knew today wouldn’t be the end of them. She’d never felt so in-sync like this with anyone before, and after their final kiss goodnight, she’d snuggled against his chest and closed her eyes—her decision made.
Today, she wouldn’t be getting on her flight home. Instead, she’d set off on the ten-hour drive back to Vancouver with Shane.
Not that he knew it yet.
She wanted to surprise him with this last summer vacation treat by booking them a room somewhere special and romantic. Just the thought of sleeping with him in an actual bed was exciting enough. She didn’t have any clients booked in tomorrow, so her manager wouldn’t mind if she took another day off. Now, all she had to do was find a hotel somewhere near the halfway mark in Revelstoke. She switched on her phone then gazed out of the window, trying to imagine Shane’s reaction when she told him. A smile curled her lips. Would the hotel shower be big enough for the two of them?
Krista’s phone beeped in her hand, startling her out of her steamy daydreams and back to what she’d been doing.
Right. Searching for a hotel. She wanted—
Her gaze hit on a text message from Ryan. Then another. And another. She hadn’t turned her phone on in days, and now all his messages popped up like one long stream of consciousness.
>I’ve seen the pictures of you and Shane...Are you seriously a thing now?... Where does this leave us?...I miss you.
Eh? Krista couldn’t believe what she was reading.
>I want us to be together...Now is the right time for us...I love you.
Finally. Ryan had said the words she’d once been so desperate to hear.
Krista lowered her phone then caught Shane staring at her.
“What is it?” he asked.
