Shane tapped his upper lip.

“Oh!” Krista snapped out of her blissful sugar-daze and wiped her mouth, though no embarrassment rose out of Shane seeing her with chocolate smears on her face. It wasn’t like this was a date and she had to impress the guy across from her. And Shane had already seen the worst of her, anyway.

Which was...very liberating.

She licked chocolate sauce off her lips and enjoyed every last crumb of her vacation treat.

Chapter 9

The tug in Shane’sgroin as he watched Krista eat cake wasn’t uncomfortable, just...unexpected. Those groans and moans and that blissful look on Krista’s face as she’d closed her eyes, savoring each mouthful, had been way too much of a reminder of what he’d been missing lately.

Well, more than lately. It had been eleven months since he’d had sex.

Often, he didn’t mind going without. His new life plan kept him too busy, but...

He missed getting naked with a woman.

A fact that Zoey had brought to the forefront of his mind last night. He’d even bought condoms this morning in case she’d said yes to hiking with him—in casehe’dhad the guts to ask her—and his mind had raced with possibilities of the two of them in the wilderness...

What a lucky escape he’d had!

The lure of sex had clouded his judgement. Hadn’t he learned from his past mistakes?

The one-night stands he’d had trying to rid Fiona from his heart still left a nasty taste in his mouth. Despite how he came across on social media, casual sex like that hadn’t ever been on his agenda. But now thatA Relationshipwas top of his list of things to avoid, no-strings sex would be the only sex he’d be having for the rest of his life. And that kind of sex only came with the mutual understanding on both sides thatA Relationshipbetween would never appear on the horizon.

“Ready to head back to the car?” he said.

Krista nodded as she sucked her top lip, where another smear of chocolate had sat for the past five minutes. He would’ve told her about that one too, but she’d been enjoying herself so much, like she was—yeah, like that—and he hadn’t wanted to interrupt her until she’d...um...finished.

Who knew a simple slice of cake could put such a blissful sparkle in those wounded hazel eyes?

“Hey, how about another photo?” he asked. “I’ve got a bet to win.”

“Dream on.” Krista wiped the corners of her mouth, the napkin not hiding her sly little grin. “I’ll happily take your money though.”

She shifted next to him, and with the mountains behind them, Shane took another photo. This time, Krista was properly smiling, and she looked good with it too, especially against the dark, alpine landscape and deep-blue sky.
