Chapter 6

Ugh. Should’ve knownhe’d be a love-sucks kinda guy.

But as Shane parked the car in Lake Louise’s main parking lot, Krista couldn’t be bothered to tell him that he was wrong.

Love was awesome.

Love made the world go round.

Love was...not what she had with Ryan.

Ouch. She recoiled as the truth slapped her in the face again.

She’d been an idiot. All these months, she’d been a muppet. A pushover. A donkey hankering after the carrot Ryan was forever dangling in front of her nose.

Just let me get over this shitty time, Kris...

I want us to wait for the right moment...

We can’t start anything now. Life’s too complicated...

There was alwayssomething—and she hadn’t even realized it. She’d let herself be brainwashed into a state of limbo. They were neither a couple, nor just friends, and Krista had trotted, willingly, after him.

She stared at the message he’d sent her. Sure, he asked if she was okay. Sure, he cared that she’d still make the flight back home.

But why no mention of Zoey?

As Shane parked the car at Lake Louise, Krista texted Ryan back.

>Shane made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. You know I’ve always wanted to hike the Rockies. See you Sunday.

He replied.

>OK.

Krista stared at her phone.Okay? That’s all he had to say?

She switched her phone off and shoved it into the glove box. Shane cut the engine, and she got out of the car, gripping the handle so hard her knuckles turned white as she fought the urge to slam the door and kick a dent into the side of it.

Instead, she marched across the parking lot, ignoring the monstrous Lake Louise hotel that dominated the view to her right. She focused only on the peaks towering beyond the lake, struggling to see anything past her hurt and anger. Behind her, Shane hummed a jaunty tune she only vaguely recognized. She lengthened her stride to get some distance from him, pushing past her fatigue from her early morning run and hike up Tunnel Mountain.

Love sucks. The sooner you accept that, the better.

What the hell did he know about love?

Nothing, from the sounds of it. His quick dismissal of Zoey had left Krista feeling cold. Clearly he wasn’t an emotional man.

One woman is pretty much like any other.
