“Charli—” War shot up from the bed and pulled me into his arms.

“I lost one person I love, I couldn’t lose you, too,” I sobbed, clinging to him.

“I’m here. I’m never leaving.” His big palm gently stroked my back. “I’m like duct tape, like, er, white on rice, bees to pollen…”

At his attempt to tease me, a trembling smile tugged at my mouth. “I love you,” I whispered into his tear-wet neck. “So much.”

“So do I, Blue. So do I.”

Inhaling a shaky breath, I eased back and swiped my damp face. “I’m going to shower.”

“All right. I’ll go get my truck, then join you.”

After War left, still emotionally shaky, I gingerly clipped my hair up so as not to get it or my wounds wet, removed my clothes, and headed for the shower.
