She kissed him. When she pulled back, his forehead rested briefly against hers.
Then she took the name tag from his hand and pinned it to his chest.
"Come on," she said, turning toward the door. "Let's go back."
He followed her out.
April
THEY WALKED BACK TOGETHER, April’s hand still in his.
The booth had rearranged in their absence. Mateo had claimed more table space with his food containers, Jax was showing Liam something on his phone, Killian and Arthur were deep in a quiet conversation involving numbers with too many zeros.
But when April and Caleb stepped back into view, all of it paused. Five faces turned toward them.
April didn't explain, she slid back into her seat and the booth settled around her again.
Caleb sat next to her without hesitation, settled in like he'd been there all along.
Across the table, Jax raised his glass. The booth quieted. He looked directly at April, lips pulled in a smirk. The kind that suggested he knew something she didn’t.
“To the six pranks of April,” he said.
Everyone raised their glasses.
“To the six pranks of April.”
They drank.
And April had the uncomfortable feeling that Jax had said six like he was counting.
