“I’m excited,” Bellamy admits. “This’ll be fun.”
Sighing happily, we walk to the taco stand, and I find myself looking to the future. It’s all happening so fast, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
I need the good things to hold onto after the horrors of the past.
Chapter
Forty
ANSEL
I havefour guns hidden in various places of my body, though my short sleeved shirt and jeans don’t seem as if I am. There’s also two knives in my pockets, and my head is constantly on a swivel as I make sure we’re safe.
I only relax slightly when we arrive at the warehouse after getting lunch, and Abbott glances knowingly at me as we get out of the SUV. Henri parked inside of the warehouse, so we’re as safe as possible.
“Hey,” Lyle says, walking up to us with his pack on either side of him. “We have the room set up with everything you need. If you decide to get inventive, please let me know so I can provide you with whatever is necessary.”
“There were jokes about making me a human toilet at one point,” Cassidy says, rolling her eyes. “Have anything that I can use to make that happen without actually having to shit on someone?”
“The sewage system on this block has been on the fritz,” Silas says with a snort. “They have a pump that can be removed in thisbuilding and put anywhere you need it. It’ll be messy, but it’ll do the job.”
No one blinks an eye at his words, though Winter goes a little pale. I expect that’s more because of the baby than the topic of conversation.
“Have any masks that’ll cover the smell?” I ask. “Winter has had a sensitive stomach recently.”
“Vicks underneath the nose and a full face piece respirator should help with that,” Silas murmurs, slipping his phone out of his pocket to text someone. “It’ll be here soon. Anything else?”
“Are you going to lecture us about this, Lyle?” I ask teasingly.
“Why do you think I’m here?” Lyle asks. “It’s to make sure the warehouse is scrubbed clean once you’re done, not to lecture. The law has its place, but it doesn’t always ensure there’s justice.”
“The type of justice that includes the inappropriate use of a sewage pipe unfortunately isn’t found in a courthouse,” Easton says, shrugging. “Sometimes, you have to color outside of the lines. Lyle knows that, as much as he groans about the lengths he may have to go to keep us all out of prison.”
“Honestly, while I find the law fascinating, it’s more fun to play on the dark side,” Lyle says.
“It was fun watching you use a sledgehammer to take someone out in the bunker,” Silas muses.
I bet there was some really hot sex that happened when they got home too, based on the way they’re glancing at each other. Fuck yes, I’m for it.
“Clara and Winchell are this way. I had to gag both of them because they wouldn’t fucking shut up,” Lyle grumbles.
“Sounds about right for Clara,” Bellamy muses.
I like that he isn’t using her honorific because she doesn’t fucking deserve it. Clara is a shitty fucking human, and it sounds like Cassidy has a plan for her.
Moving closer to Cass as we walk toward the room our prisoners are being held, I wrap my arm around her waist and tug her close to me. She comes easily with a smile at me as she allows herself to snuggle against me.
“You’re going to let one of us work that sewage pipe for you, right, baby?” I ask.
“Yes. I know I can’t be anywhere near that stuff,” Cassidy agrees.
“You just had surgery, and your immune system is compromised,” Silas says, glancing over his shoulder. “I had several masks picked up.”
“Thank you, Silas,” she says with a smile.
We don’t want anyone to know about the pregnancies yet. Not only are we worried about both of the babies surviving to term with the stress Winter and Cassidy have been under, we also don’t want to get our friends too excited yet.
I want to ask the doctor what a good time frame to announce is, or we may just wait until they begin showing and then announce.
