Meanwhile, the music kept booming and they kept twerking even though I knew they saw us enter.
"Come on over here, Nyomi!" Nika shouted over the music. "Get on over here and shake that ass! You got a nice one."
Zo waved her away. "Nyomi can barely twerk. She's no competition. Get her out of here. Just givemethe crown."
I rolled my eyes. "I can do a little something."
I tried.
I really did.
I bent my knees and attempted to move my hips in time with the beat.
Nika stopped mid-twerk and stared at me. "Oh God, girl. No. No, girl. We got to help you out. You dance like a white girl."
“Hey, that’s being racist.” Zo frowned. “White girls dance much better than that.”
I protested and twisted my hips. "I’ve got rhythm!"
"What the hell kind of rhythm is that?” Deja started laughing.
“Oh no. I can’t let you go out like this." Nika hurried over to me. "You got to catch the beat first, girl. Then try to twerk with the beat. Look.”
She started clapping. “One. Two. One. Two."
"Get away from me!" I laughed. “I had the beat.”
“Yeah. You had the beat.” Nika shook her head. “It was just for another song that was maybe playing in your mind.”
I sucked my teeth and went over to Deja.
“I told you Nyomi can’t dance.” Zo puffed his joint.
“Well, she can’t dance, but she sure knows how to kidnap people in style.” Deja gave me a hug. “Girl, after this island trip. You can kidnap me anytime.”
“I’m sorry about that by the way. I didn’t know they were going to actually take y’all off like that.” I hugged her back and then glanced over at the Fangs still in the room.
Kaoru was definitely looking at Deja likefuck yeah, I'm going to try and talk to her.
But then I saw Rin. For the first time since I'd met him, Rin did not look bored.
In fact. . .he looked laser-focused. His eyes were locked on Deja's ass, and there was something in his expression I'd never seen before.
Blazing lust.
Wild interest.
Hot hunger.
I widened my eyes. This was the same man who always looked like he'd rather be anywhere else. The same man who carried himself like royalty and never seemed impressed by anything. And now he was staring at Deja like she was the only person in the room.
Deja went over to her phone and cut the music off. "It's about time you showed up, Nyomi."
“I’m not late.” I held my hands out and got in the chair next to a metal rack with strips of hair hanging from it. Extensions in every color imaginable. Black. Brown. Blonde. Red. Burgundy. Even some wild colors like purple and blue.
"You done got men to kidnap me, bring me out to Japan, and then you're going to take all this time tonotget your hair braided? You lucky that I've been enjoying myself the whole time."
"My bad."
