“I hear you—” I got out, as my line beeped.

Looking at the screen in the truck, I arched a brow, surprised to see that name.

“Hey, Soya, let me call you, right back.” “Okay—”

I didn’t let her finish her sentence, as I clicked over. “Hello?”

“Hey,what’sup,girl?”

I smirked. “What’s up, Too Low?”

“Oh, nothing much. You can talk, huh?” “Yeah.”

“Okay, okay. How’s the twins?”

“They’re fine,” I responded, although I knew that I’d never told him what I was having, but I was sure that the gossip had reached him.

“Good.”

“Umm hmm. Now, tell me what’s up,” I insisted.

“Okay, I’ll cut straight to the chase. Ole gul that I been staying with is tripping, and I’m honestly done with that relationship. Now, I was wondering if you minded if I crashed at the apartment. I mean, I still got the key and shit, but Ion wanna make that move without hollering at you first.”

“Oh, wow. I wasn’t expecting that,” I admitted. “But go ‘head. Shit, you might as well use it, until that lease ends in six months.”

“Is all the furniture and shit still in it?”

“Yep. I haven’t touched nothing. Haven’t even been there, honestly. QT been stopping by and chilling, here and there, but that’s about it. I honestly plan on giving everything in thatapartment to whoever needs it in my family. Cause I can’t do nothing with it.”

“Damn, it’s like that? After you was so proud of how you trans-formed that apartment, you don’t want nothing?”

“I mean, I honestly don’t have anywhere to put it. And it would be crazy of me to pay for a storage, when I can just bless somebody who can actually use it.”

“That’s what’s up. So, tell me. Is that nigga treating you right?”I hesitated. “Everything’s good.”

“Glad to hear that. But…on another note, I was just driving through the city, and you just crossed my mind. The weather is perfect. The sky is clear. And you usually be wanting to go outside whenever it’s like this. Have a nigga driving all around the city. Just talking and laughing. I haven’t experienced nothing like it since. What we had was special, you know?”

I smiled, knowing that he was telling the truth. “It really was. Sometimes I still wake up, nearly forgetting that it’s not you laying next to me.”

“Man, tell me about it. That’s the worst fucking part for me.” “Right,” I agreed, refusing to go any deeper into the conversation. I knew that if I did, it would just open the flood gates. And I wasn’t exactly sure of what I’d do if I allowed Too Low to get too close. Being with him came naturally, and I didn’t want to slip and naturally end up on his dick.

“Yeah, well I’ma let you go,” he offered, probably picking up on my vibe.

“Okay. You be good,” I told him.

“Youtoo,”heresponded,beforeIdisconnectedthecall.

For a long second, my mind drifted o$, as I thought about the old days. Wondering about what could’ve been.

was about to head home, when Face’s mama called, asking if I could scoop up Mattie for her, because she was tied up at the moment. Apparently, Mattie’s car was in the shop, after

her man had vandalized it, and now, she needed a ride from his River Oaks high-rise.

Honestly, I didn’t understand why Mattie just didn’t order an Uber. I was sure that she had the bread to do so. However, when I pulled up on her in the parking garage, I quickly realized why Uber hadn’t been an option. She had several suitcases, and trash bags with her, looking like she’d been kicked out.

Rolling my window down, I addressed her. “Hey, your mama asked me to pick you up.”

Wearing a bonnet, and dressed in her pajamas, Mattie frowned. “Why didn’t she come herself?”
