I laughed. “Yeah. You?”

“Yep.” He frowned. “Is tonight’s guy your eye candy guy?”

I groaned. “Don’t remind me.” I looked down at my text. “Looks like my date is picking me up at five and we are doing dinner and dancing.”

“Interesting,” Jacob said. “I’m to pick up my date at five-thirty for dinner and dancing.”

“Oh my gosh,” I said. “I think they’re going to make us go to the senior center’s monthly dance.”

Jacob threw back his head and laughed. “You’re kidding? We aren’t senior citizens. They know that, right?”

“It’s held at the senior center, but really anyone in the community can go.” I rolled my eyes. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve only been once, but the youngest person I saw there last time was…well, it was me. Then I guess my mom would be the next youngest.”

He laughed even harder. “Our dates are going to hate this. You realize that right?”

“Do you care?” I asked softly.

Jacob sobered, rose, and kissed me until I forgot where I was or what question I’d even asked.

He pulled back. “Not in the least.”

Chapter 15

“Why are you two here?” I asked, pouring myself a glass of wine. “Shouldn’t you be at Jayden’s house and you be heading to pick up your own date for tonight?”

Jacob and Brody grinned at each other. They seemed to have bonded this afternoon while swimming in the pool. While ecstatic they’d gotten along, I didn’t want them here to witness my humiliation of being picked up once again by some guy.

“You know we want to see your eye candy,” Jacob teased.

“Tell me again,” Brody said. “You’ve gone out with a practical guy, a guy that had the same interests as you, and now you’re going out with what Grams and her friends think is a beau hunk? Isn’t that the right term from that movie you sometimes watch? What’s the name of it?”

I gritted my teeth. “Sixteen Candles.”

Jacob and Brody laughed even louder.

“Yeah,” Brody continued, “that’s the one. I want to see what Grams thinks is your beau hunk.”

“Me, too,” Jacob said.

Brody turned to Jacob. “And you already had your practical date. Someone who has her future lined out and in line with yours. Who was it?”

“Francesca someone,” Jacob said.

Brody’s mouth dropped. “Francesca? Francesca? Like one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, Francesca? I was just a kid the first time I saw her, and I remember then thinking I’d never seen anyone so beautiful.”

“So you keep saying,” I said tightly.

Brody’s eyes widen. “I mean, she’s nothing compared to you, Mom. You’re really the most beautiful woman.”

“Don’t patronize me.”

Jacob slapped Brody on the shoulder. “Don’t even try to dig your way out, son. Just apologize and move on.”

“Sorry, Mom.” Brody turned to Jacob. “So what was wrong with her? I mean, are you going to ask her out again once this bet is over?”

“I don’t think so,” Jacob said.

“Why not?” Brody asked. “I mean, it’sFrancesca.”
