“We can at least check out the place. Maybe that was his new client.” Dante sits forward and pulls his tablet in front of him. “We need to get back to work.”
I clear my throat. “Do you want me to deal with Sara and get her started on something?”
Dante stops and lifts his pale eyes to mine. “I have a list for her. At least Tom did something before he left us high and dry.”
“Might want to give her something so she doesn’t tear apart Tom’s office.” I smirk.
Dante smiles. “Serve the bastard right to leave us in charge of his sister and then abandon us.”
“She’ll be fine until the end of our meeting.” Wyatt gestures to me. “Get Mark back on the line.”
I open my laptop and resume the meeting. This note is the only thing we have to go on. Tom covered his tracks a little too well.
Chapter 9
Future Value
Sara
I’ve scheduled a few appointments for myself: a waxing and a mani-pedi. Made sure the dog walker got into the house okay and watched a few cat videos on my phone while waiting for the dick patrol to show up to tell me what I’m supposed to be doing.
After all, I get paid either way, so if they want to pay me to watch a video of a cat squeezing through progressively smaller holes, who am I to go disrupt their meeting to get actual accounting work. I’ll get the credit for school either way, even if I don’t get the experience.
“Sara.”
I raise my gaze at Dante’s voice and arch my eyebrow. He better have an apology ready.
“I’ve got a list of things for you to work on.” Dante gestures with his head.
I cross my arms over my chest and glare at him with my lips firmly closed. I don’t care that this is their business. That’s not how he treats me.
His eyes narrow, but he sighs and comes into Tom’s office. He shuts the door. “I didn’t mean to yell at you, pip.”
My eyebrow raises higher even as my heart races at the shortened nickname, which he’s only used one other time. Like hell he didn’t mean to yell.
He presses his lips together and sits in the seat across from me. His hands clasp between his knees as he leans his elbows on his thighs and looks up at me.
“You interrupted our meeting. That’s not how things are done at work and you should know that.”
My cheeks heat because I do, but I don’t want to cave on this. “I got excited because I found a clue.”
Dante nods. “It might be, but it could have waited. I’m sorry you were sitting in here with nothing to do, but we still have to work. It won’t happen again. I can keep you busy all day.”
Other parts of me get heated at the thought of him keeping me busy all day. I brush it off and stop thinking about how perfect his dick is.
“Fine.” I stand and run my hands over my skirt. “Show me what I need to do, but I’m leaving for lunch at noon.”
His blue eyes narrow on me and he says with a smirk, “Hot date?”
I smile. “Actually, yes.”
His smirk disappears. “Don’t take longer than an hour, pipsqueak.”
“It never takes me that long, Dante.” Winking, I walk past him to the door. “You know that.”
His low groan merges with my laughter as I open the door and walk into the open area. Wyatt turns to look at me and my laugh dies in my throat. I swallow because there’s still a part of me that longs for his attention. Craves it.
Dante’s hand presses on my lower back and a shiver rushes through me. When I turn to him, he gives me a gentle headshake. Yeah, there’s no problem here, so I don’t need the constant reminder that Wyatt is off-limits.
