It’s confronting and horrible, but I can see it will help long term.I’ve spoken to Mom about it and she’s been supportive.Dad keeps saying stupid things about how I shouldn’t have put myself in the situation and that I need to be more careful.

Translation: it was my fault.

Jayden invited me over for dinner at his new house a few nights ago.We tried not to talk about Liam, but he came up a few times.

“He wants me to join BHS,” Jay said.

“Yeah?You think you might?”

Jayden sipped his beer.“Thinking about it.Hate my job.”

I laughed.“I can’t believe you’re even working there.Weren’t you a sniper?”

His eyes darkened.“How did you know that?”

“Because I was in love with your best friend for three thousand years and listened to every single word you two said.”I rolled my eyes.

Was.

“Well, that shit you don’t listen to,” he snapped, surprising me.

I studied him, confused by his reaction to what I thought was a pretty straightforward question.

“Why?It’s not classified.Is it?”

Jayden played with the coaster on the table, almost like he didn’t want to talk about it at all.He used to be so excited and proud to be in the Air Force.

“No.It’s just not something we discuss. You know what snipers do right?”

Oh.

Yeah.

They kill people.

“Sorry.”

“It’s fine.Just forget it.”Jayden shook his head.“So, yeah, I might take the job.I’m going to speak to Josh and Aidan soon.”

Which means he’d be working with Liam again.

“So how is he?”I asked.I couldn’t avoid him forever.Liam was a part of our lives and family.I didn’t want to avoid him.

“Like a kid who’s lost his favorite toy.”Jayden sipped his beer, lifting his brows in question.

But what was the question?

Was he really okay with the two of us being together, even if Liam did want me.

Which he clearly doesn’t.

“So, I’m a toy?”

“You know what I mean.Do you love him?Or was it a crush?”

I shrugged.

It didn’t matter. It had been weeks, and Liam had stayed away just as I’d asked.Which was telling. If he really loved me, he would have moved heaven and earth.
