“Good. Because that’s what it looked like. And honestly, I’d hate to think I imagined all that delicious tension.”
I laugh, but it’s shaky.
“The timing’s impossible. There’s Jason. The trial. Everything’s so uncertain.”
She pats my arm. “Honey, uncertainty is the price of falling in love with a rockstar. Or becoming one yourself.”
We’re both quiet for a beat. Then Chloe grins.
“Just so you know—if you don’t marry him, I will.”
I burst out laughing, the tension dissolving.
For the first time all night, I feel lighter.
CHAPTER 46
TARA
“Welcome home, roommate!”
Keesha throws her arms wide the moment I step through the door. The comforting aroma of Keesha's signature chicken soup fills the room.
"Let me put my bag down," I say, walking toward the bedroom we share. “How did you get your summer roommate to move out?"
“She couldn't deal with my 'neatnik' ways."
We both laugh.
"I washed your sheets, so it's all fresh for you."
"Thanks," I say, admiring the crisply made bed. "But what's that on the pillow?"
"A frog," she says with a laugh.
I pick it up. It's the exact replica of Posey's Mr. Froggy. "What made you think of buying me a frog?"
“I was shopping at Bloomingdale’s for new jeans. Saw it in some display. The frog just spoke to me. I thought that since you're coming home, you might need a new friend.”
My throat tightens. And my gold locket seems to warm against my skin as I pick up Mr. Froggy Junior and stroke his soft green fabric.
Instantly I’m back in Posey’s room, tucking her in, weaving bedtime stories.
Man, I miss her already.
“That was really sweet of you,” I manage, turning to hug Keesha again. “Thank you.”
Keesha’s laugh is light, but her eyes are curious.
“Now that you've been nanny to a billionaire rockstar, I thought this bedroom would feel too small for you now.”
I shake my head. “No. This is just the right size.”
CHAPTER 47
TARA
The bell above the door jingles as Zaza, Keesha, and I step inside Mickey's Deli.
