Page 51 of His to Mate

How could I refuse a request like that? Unfortunately, I didn’t think I could.

Pulling out a chair, Logan tilted his head to the side and said, “Why don’t you tell me how you and my brother met. I never got a chance to ask Ethan for myself.”

In an unspoken command for me to follow suit, Logan took a seat at the table. Though I was reluctant to do so, I did as well.

I didn’t see the harm in telling the truth, so I did. “Although quite a few years apart, my father and Ethan were both raised at Cascia House together. When they both settled in Montana, they grew even closer. After my father died, Ethan handled his estate and took care of the funeral arrangements, as well as managing my inheritance until I turned eighteen, though I hadn’t known it at the time.”

Leaning back in his chair, Logan said, “I see. And your father never told you what you were? You thought you were just another regular human girl until recently?”

I shrugged. “Yeah. It’s like Ethan said. I was completely oblivious about myself, my mom, and the Tupilaq pack until I was attacked in the alley and witnessed that asshole, Garrett, shift into a wolf.”

“And that’s when my brother claimed you as his mate?” Logan queried, his familiar grey-blue eyes scanning my face for what I presumed were potential lies or half-truths. “The same night he found you in the alleyway?”

I blushed, but tried to act normal when I said, “Yes. He was afraid that unless someone claimed me, things could dangerously escalate and I might get hurt.”

Logan smirked at my response. “So you think my brother tethered himself to you for life out of the goodness of his heart?”

I didn’t like this line of questioning, and it reflected clearly on my face. “Yes, I do. For as many years as I’ve known him, Ethan has always had my best interest in mind. No exceptions.”

“Your best interest or his?” Logan returned with a pointed gleam in his eye.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I demanded, angry on my mate’s behalf.

“Do you know what it’s like to smell an omega, Millie?” Logan licked his lips like he was about to taste the best meal of his life. “It’s fucking ecstasy. Pure bliss. And that’s before you even sink into their sweet, slick bodies. That’s enough to drive a man mad. To kill for, even.”

This conversation was getting out of hand fast. “That’s not why Ethan and I are mates,” I angrily declared. “He made me his because he wanted ME to be his. Omega or not.”

“Oh, yes, Millie, I’m sure he did, but it wasn’t out of any kind of nobility. An alpha can’t help himself around an omega. That’s the sweetest pussy we’ll ever sink into. It’s fuckingaddictive, as the sounds coming from your bedroom tonight more than prove.”

The reminder of what Ethan and I had shared earlier, and that Logan had been listening, made me want to gag.

“Just sitting across from you tonight, the scent of your slick in the air,” Logan’s skin gave a pulsing shudder, like when a horse’s sensitive back twitches after a pesky fly lands upon it, “well, it’s downright intoxicating. And when you finally go into heat for the first time, that’s an unparalleled pleasure for an alpha. Omegas are rare, Millie. They are prized beyond measure because of how useful they are to us. Nothing can compare. Nothing.”

Just what every woman wanted to hear. Her only worth lay in a man’s pleasure in her body. I felt sick to my stomach over Logan’s words and his implication that Ethan and I had nothing more in common than animal attraction. Sure, we had that in spades, but that’s not all we had. There was history, love, and devotion between us as well.

I didn’t care what disgusting things Logan spouted. Ethan and I were true mates who fiercely loved one another. Long before we’d ever bonded, I knew that to be a fact. Nobody would ever change my mind about that. Definitely not this foul man, who’d doubtlessly been drinking for hours and had his share of unresolved issues with his younger brother.

“You speak like I’m nothing more than meat on the hoof,” I bitterly accused. “I’ll have you know that what Ethan and I share is more than just pleasure. We love one another. Deeply!”

Logan’s arrogant grin widened. “It’s cute that you think so, omega. But let me tell you something. If another alpha is determined to have you, and he fights Ethan to the death, nothing is going to stop the new victor from slamming his knot into your eager cunt. Nothing!”

Shivers ran down my spine at his crass words. What was he even talking about? Another alpha? Were his words hypothetical, or was he alluding to someone in specific, like my stalker?

“That will never happen!” I hissed.

Reaching for my knee, Logan traced his calloused finger along the exposed skin, then boldly traveled higher up my thigh. “Oh, it could easily happen, Millie. You might scream and fight as he savages you, but in the end, you’d surrender to his knot and bite like every good omega should. And you’d enjoy every fucking thrust of that throbbing cock as he did.”

Horrified, I shot to my feet in a rage. Before my chair tumbled backward and banged loudly against the tile floor behind me, Logan caught it in his steady grip.

“Do yourself a favor and drink my orange juice, Logan. I think you’ve had enough whiskey for one night,” I heatedly retorted before stalking upstairs without looking back.

As soon as I got to our shared bedroom, I paused at the door, trying to collect myself. Ethan couldn’t see me like this, flustered and out of breath. If he did, he’d know something was wrong and he’d demand to know what it was. As much as I wanted to tell him, I knew better. Logan had been drunk. He hadn’t meant what he’d said tonight. But if Ethan found out, he’d be furious, and any chance at reconciliation would be laid forfeit.

Their relationship was a complicated one for sure. A revelation like that would kill any chance of it ever solidifying into something that could stand on its own merit and mature intoa true familial bond. I didn’t want to come between the two brothers. I wanted the union to either thrive or flounder on its own. I owed my mate that much.

When my heartbeat had slowed to a less suspicious rate, I turned the knob and entered the bedroom. Sliding into our bed, I lay on my back, running through Logan’s words in my head.

Ethan stretched and placed his arm around me, curling me into his side. Nooked against his chest like this, I felt safe. My worries began to fade, and a contentment fell over me as my mate’s proximity assuaged my fears. When he began to purr, a vibrating sensation rippled through me, causing my whole body to tingle. My sex was no exception. It contracted with need the moment Ethan touched me, or did anything, really.
