“Iris, call Wizard. Bring her in. It’s time for us to be the hungers instead of sitting on our asses waiting for the next attack.” Desiree decided as she turned to look at the damage to her house once more.

Chapter

Eighteen

Max leaned back in his seat, the chair creaking at the shift in weight as he closed his eyes. The past week and a half had been a whirl wind of emotions.

For the past week and a half, when they weren’t going through Desiree’s past, what they could that wasn’t considered classified, they were working on the house and property itself.

New windows were installed the next morning, then they started patching up the bullet holes in the siding. It took them a couple of days, but it was finally decided on a fencing solution.

Once she’d agreed on the fencing, it was a job finding someone who could do the job then and there. Luckily Jose and Tiny had someone on the SWAT team whose brother did fencing for a living and took the job pro-bono.

They had the property surveyed to make sure they were marking the proper areas for where to do the fences. During the survey, the guy who was helping them mark the property let it slip that the owners of the sixty acres that connected to Desiree’s property were for sale at a cheap rate since the owners were wanting to desperately sell.

Max, Desiree, Andrea, Jose, Tiny, and Teddy walked around the neighboring property to see if Desiree wanted to buy it. Inthe end, Max bought it to add more security for Desiree and her property.

When Max, Jose, Tiny, and Teddy checked out the abandoned house out and road they had found on the property, they found the hide out that the crew who had attacked Desiree’s property used. They had used the abandoned house to keep an eye on Desiree and her movements.

From what they could tell, the crew had been there for a couple of weeks. Jose called and requested a forensic team to come to the shack-like house to collect what evidence they could find.

They looked more outside around the house and the property as they walked back toward Desiree’s. The four men were now more alert while looking for more evidence during their walk.

“I don’t understand who would want to target me.” Desiree admitted to him while they had snuggled on the love seat later that night.

“What about Bradley and his stripper chick?” Andrea brought up from the other couch.

Max, Andrea, Jose, Iris, Tiny, Angel, Bella, and Teddy had all stayed over for dinner and a movie. All have been on edge since they found the abandoned house and the fact it had been used by the unknown perps that targeted Desiree.

“Last I heard from Daniels, which was two years ago, the stripper left him after having a kid which turned out to be some other guy’s kid. Bradley got an other than honorable discharge. No one’s heard from him since. They assume he went back to Iowa.” Desiree shrugged as she stretched her legs out in front of her.

“He was booted from the military because the last op he’d been on, he’d abandoned his post. Got drunk and passed out when he was supposed to be on night watch while the others got some rest. Because of that, two teammates died when severalinsurgents managed to sneak up on them.” Max informed the whole room.

“How the fuck did he only get an other than honorable discharge? That should have been straight up Leavenworth prison time with a dishonorable discharge.” Tiny growled angrily.

“His attorney cited PTSD from a previous mission and the issues he’d been dealing with such as his divorce, a sick kid, then finding out said sick kid wasn’t his. He’d claimed he wasn’t drunk nor had he been drinking. He stated he’d been sick at the time they were sent out on the mission and it had hit him harder while they were in the middle of the desert. They had no way to check his alcohol level on the op, so it was hard to prove the claim.” Max breathed deeply before slowly exhaling.

“Asshole.” Desiree mumbled under her breath, making Max huff out a laugh.

“Babe, what ever happened to that guy, Mutt, that was on your team?” Max asked, looking down at her.

Max felt her stiffen in his arms. He now knew she’d never told her brothers or the women in the club about her team having been captured and tortured.

“I-I don’t know. Never saw him once we landed back on US soil and I separated from the military.”

“Wait…are you talking about a Peter Blevins that everyone dubbed Mutt because he was an ugly fucker?” Jose asked, looking between Max and Desiree.

“Yeah.” Desiree answered hesitantly.

“Have you talked to any of your teammates aside from Daniels?” Max asked Desiree as he shifted on the loveseat.

“Not really. Daniels and I only talk when we run into one another, which isn’t very often, really. I know he is still with the Green Berets, or at least he was as of two years ago.”

“Daniels?” Teddy looked between Desiree and Max in confusion. “You’re not talking about Tennessee, are you?”

“How do you know him?”

Max looked down at Desiree in confusion due to her question. Part of him wondered about the relationship between the two of them.
