Heath’s chest lightened, and he couldn’t help feeling a little smug.Whatever else she claimed, he knew she’d wanted to kiss him too.How was he ever going to convince her they were good together if all she wanted to do was leave?
Quinn was relievedwhen they finally pulled into the parking lot of the REKD Gaming headquarters building.Sitting in the back seat of that car, knowing Heath was so close, had practically killed her. She’d known him for a year. How had their friendship suddenly changed into something more?
It couldn’t just be claiming he was her fiancé.Fakefiancé.Were her brain and her heart forgetting the fake part?
Joe pulled next to the Wallachs’ SUV.They appeared to have already gone in.There were so many trees, it reminded Quinn of Washington.
The bodyguard opened the gate to their smallish backyard, and she was enthralled. It looked like anything but part of an office building.Encircled by fencing and trees, it had a grassy area with enough space for children to play but also included a fire pit and a barbecue. And a log cabin-like covered deck.
“I’m glad you made it safe and sound,” Sara said from the back door.
“Oh, I’m in love with your home already,” Quinn couldn’t help gushing.
“Thank you. While I can’t claim any of the credit because Ezreal had it already done when we met, I agree with you.The children love it too.”Sara stepped back and held the door open.“Come right in.”
“Wow.”Quinn stared into a great room that followed the log cabin theme. The large space could accommodate many people but still had the warmth and homeyness of a much smaller space.
“Your rooms are upstairs, so follow me.”Sara led them up the staircase.
Quinn glanced over her shoulder to see how Viktor was doing. He wore a sad-puppy expression as he stared at all his luggage, and Ezreal didn’t hesitate to grab one suitcase. The viscount took the other two, expressing gratitude with every step.
“Viktor, your room is this first one,” Ezreal said, opening the door.“It has its own bathroom.”He looked like he meant to say more, but after glancing at Quinn, he ducked his head.
Sara took over.“Heath and Quinn, yours is across the hall from Viktor’s.It’s the one Heath’s parents use and has a lovely spa tub.”She stepped out of the way to let them enter.
“Thank you.”Quinn had to work hard to smile.
Heath nodded and entered the room, his face a little pale.
“We’ve ordered pizza for dinner.Lots of it.”Sara grinned.“We know it’s been a long day, so if you just want to crash, feel free. But there’s plenty of food whenever you get hungry.Heath, Kayn mentioned that the first meeting is at eight tomorrow.Joe will come to show you where to go.”Sara closed the door and left them together.
Heath turned to face Quinn.“I’m so sorry.I had no idea they were going to put us in the same room. When Kayn asked who I’d be bringing, I only said you were my fiancée because Viktor was coming.”
“It’s all on me.I’m the one who put you in this situation.”Heath was a friend, and she trusted him not to take advantage of the situation.
She scanned the spacious room. The cozy love seat in front of the fireplace wouldn’t fit her length, much less his.Like the rest of the house, the bedroom was decorated like a cabin, including a king-size log bed.The floor wasn’t carpeted. It wouldn’t work as a bed.
“I can sleep on the love seat,” Heath said, sounding dubious.
“We’ll both sleep on the bed. There’s plenty of room, and we can put a pillow between us.Don’t even worry about it.”
“If you’re sure.”He watched her with warmth in his eyes, looking about to say something. Then his stomach rumbled.Loudly.The noise startled them both, and they burst out laughing.
“We need to get you fed,” Quinn said, grateful for the reprieve from something intense. She grabbed her camera.“What do you think Viktor worked on during the flight? He hardly talked with anybody.”
“He’s really interested in REKD, so maybe that.Let’s collect your guest and see if he wants some pizza.”
“Myguest?”Quinn said over her shoulder as she strode from the bedroom.“He’s a guest atyourhotel.”
“Not anymore, remember? He checked out.”He caught up with her.“Now he’s only here because of you.”
They knocked at Viktor’s door, and he opened it immediately.
“You hungry?”Quinn asked.
“I am.”Viktor stepped from his room and closed the door.“Pizza in Europe is not the same as what is served in America.I am quickly becoming a fan of it and can understand why Americans eat so much of it.”He put his hand on his slim stomach.“I have no wish to get fat from eating it, however.”
“There are healthier versions. When you get back home, you’ll have to get your cook to check out some recipes.”
