About fifteen minutes into the movie, I nearly flew out of my seat at what sounded like a gunshot behindme. My adrenaline spiked, and the lights in the theater flashed on. The movie stopped and chaos erupted.
Next thing I knew, Wes came rushing through the crowd toward me. He reached out and wrapped his arms around me. “Are you okay?”
“Yes.” I spoke into his chest, feeling my nervous system calm from just being in his arms.
He looked around. “What the hell was that noise?”
“Speaker malfunction,” someone shouted.
He panted as he looked down at me. “I thought…”
“I know what you thought.” I cradled his face. “Thankfully, this time it wasn’t that.”
“I was so fucking scared,” he admitted.
“How the hell did you get to me so fast?” I asked.
“I’d been watching you the entire time.”
Our eyes locked. I was hopelessly in love with him.
Clearing my throat, I asked, “Are you dating that actress?”
He chuckled. “No, Juliette. I couldn’t stand working for that asshole Bradley any longer. One more day and I was going to end up injuring him myself. So I requested a reassignment. They put me with Shelby. I just met her the other day, and this is my first assignment with her.”
“She’s pretty.”
“Pretty sure she’ll fire my ass after I ditched her just now.”
The lights in the theater began to darken again.
“I’d better go,” he whispered as he placed his hand under my chin.
I closed my eyes, cherishing his touch. When I opened them, Wes was already gone—and so was Allan.
CHAPTER 32
Wes
“What the fuck happened last night?”
My boss didnotsound happy. Though the call didn’t come as a total surprise, not after the earful I’d gotten from Shelby yesterday evening when I returned to my seat. What could I expect after running to protect someone other than the person I’d been hired to protect?
But I’d heard what I thought was a gunshot and reacted on instinct.
I sighed. “I fucked up, Tom.”
“Obviously, since I just got my ass chewed by Shelby Warner, who says she never wants you working for her again. What happened?”
“A speaker blew. It made a loud pop sound. I thought it was gunfire and ran to cover…the wrong woman.”
“Who the hell did you run to?”
“My…ex. She wrote the screenplay for the movie. I didn’t even think about it. That’s just where I went.”
“Did you know she was going to be there?”
Iswallowed. “Yeah, I did.”
