Thank fuck.
Gently, I brushed some of her bangs to the side, which is when I saw the beginnings of a bruise on the edge of her hairline. We hadn’t noticed it before. Could she have a concussion?
“Eva,” I said, shaking her lightly.
She furrowed her brows a bit, but didn’t stir.
“Eva, wake up,” I said a bit louder than I meant.
Eventually, she did blink her eyes open. There was fear in them for a moment, but it was quickly replaced with relief when she saw me.
“Indi,” she said with a tired smile.
“How are you feeling?” I asked. “Are you dizzy?” I had no clue what the signs of a concussion were.
She sat up slowly, and I put my hand out to steady her as she leaned against the headboard. “I think I’m okay,” she said. “My head just hurts.”
Her head hurt? She probably did have a concussion then.
“Okay, Mason is going to come check you out soon.”
She rubbed at her temples. “Who’s Mason?”
“Joon’s brother.”
She paused her movement, looking over. “Oh.”
“I’ll tell you about it later,” I promised.
We sat like that until Mason arrived. I stepped back to let him check her over. He did a bunch of stuff I could hardly keep track of. It seemed like that bag was endless with the amount of monitors he pulled out and unfolded. He took blood and put it through a machine. It was like our room became a doctor's office in the blink of an eye.
Eva received a barrage of questions, and she answered every one calmly and clearly.
Once he was done, Mason started packing back up. “No concussion,” he concluded. “Just the bruise on the head and some scratches you’ll want to keep clean. All of her vitals are normal, and the fetus seems unaffected, though I would double-check with your OBGYN.”
Both of us stared wide eyed at Mason. “What was that last part?” Eva asked.
Mason scrunched his brows. “You didn’t know?”
We both shook our heads. “Well, congratulations if that’s what you wanted, and condolences if not.”
Eva laughed. “I see how you and Joon are related.”
“I’m adopted, actually,” he said. “I need to be going. If you need anything, Joon has my number.”
With that, he left.
“They both have that same… prickliness,” I agreed.
“He’s just not cute like Joon is.”
“No,” I agreed with a light laugh. With Mason gone, I moved to sit on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling?”
She smirked. “The doc just gave me a clean bill of health.”
“Not about that,” I said. “About the baby.”
“Oh.” She fidgeted with the blanket between her fingers. “Good, this is what we wanted, right?”
