I let her be like that for a few more moments before adjusting her so I could lift her. We needed to get out of there before anyone came back.
As I turned her, she looked to see Indi and Joon, and the tears came harder.
Indi came up to us, rubbing his hand over the top of her head. “Hi doll.”
“You all came for me,” she blubbered out.
Obviously.
“Of course we did,” they said. “You’re ours.”
She nodded, leaning into them for a moment.
Joon stood next to Indi, looking suddenly shy. When she looked at him, fresh sobs started.
Cameo would be having a breakdown by now.
“J-joon,” she sobbed.
He leaned into her too, the acknowledgement giving him the courage to do so. “We missed you,” he said.
“I missed you, too,” she said. “L-let’s go home.”
Everyone gave her a final squeeze before heading up the stairs. I followed behind, carrying Eva the whole way.
Our girl was finally safe.
After we got Eva back, things moved in a blur. We went right back to the car where Mason was already waiting, not a scratch on him for someone who went towards active shooting.
She looked confused at the stranger, but our trust in him seemed to soothe her, and this was no time to explain. Marcus put her in the car, and Joon climbed in with her, the two cuddling in the back.
“Where’s the other one of you?” Mason asked.
“He went after the two guys,” I explained. “One of them was probably Jason.”
Mason looked annoyed. “Okay, let’s hope he gets back quickly. I don’t have time for this.”
“Things go well on your end?” Marcus asked, passing back the gun we luckily didn’t need.
Mason rolled his neck, his irritation obvious. “Everyone inside was taken care of,” he said casually, like he wasn’t talking about murder. “But their leader and his pack fled before we even arrived. He must have been tipped off somehow.”
I nodded. Though none of it was my business, I hoped for the world's sake that Mason brought that bastard down.
We waited around for a little while, everyone’s anxiety about Cameo’s absence growing by the minute.
“Maybe I should go get him,” Marcus said.
“It’s not worth it,” Mason said. “You don’t know where he went. If you get lost too then we’ll just be looking for you.”
I could see his point, but it didn’t help anyone's apprehension.
Finally, Cameo came from the gate. Marcus and I rushed him, making sure he was okay.
“Miss me or something?” he asked.
“Where were you?” I asked, not bothering with his sarcasm.
“I took care of it,” he said simply. “Jason won’t be a problem anymore.”
