Saint

They’re half carrying me, half dragging me.

Which is impressive, considering I’m not exactly built like a lightweight.

I’m big. All muscle. Dead weight when my ribs feel like they’ve been hit with a sledgehammer.

We all know I’m too big for them to carry.

But I don’t argue.

I don’t fight it.

I let them drag me.

Because every step takes me farther away from that chair.

Farther away from her.

Farther away from the cage she built.

And every breath tastes like freedom.

Cold night air fills my lungs as we push through the corridor.

“Easy,” Wolf mutters, adjusting his grip under my arm.

“I’m good,” I rasp.

Lie.

But I don’t care.

“Laney?” I manage.

The word barely makes it past my throat.

Trigger glances over his shoulder at me.

“She’s safe. She’s back at the cabin waiting.”

A beat.

“Baby too.”

Something inside my chest finally unlocks.

A tight knot I didn’t even realize was strangling me loosens all at once.

We burst through the side door just as another explosion echoes somewhere inside the building.

The processing plant groans behind us.

Metal shrieks.

Fire starts licking out of broken windows as smoke pours into the night.

The place is dying.
