It spreads faster than gossip.

Faster than fear.

It’s something worse.

Contagion.

At the emergency council meeting that night, the room feels smaller than it ever has.

People sit closer together.

Not out of unity.

Out of uncertainty.

The mayor clears his throat three different times before speaking.

No one interrupts.

No one argues.

No one even raises their voice.

And no one says the wordsurrender.

But it’s there.

In every pause.

Every glance at the floor.

Every hand that doesn’t go up when it should.

I sit there listening to the silence and realize something that makes my stomach turn.

We didn’t lose the vote.

We taught them something.
