“Hi.” It was all I could get out my throat was so dry.
A straw appeared in front of my face and I took a sip. The cool water slid over my tongue and down my parched throat washing away the feeling of sawdust.
“Better, babe?”
“Yes.Thanks.”
The cup slid from my vision and the bed dipped as Flame sat on the edge and slid his fingers over my hand. “You scared the fuckin’ shit out of me.”
“I’m sorry. But I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
He looked puzzled, and I smiled as his hand instantly went through this hair and made it even worse. “You know if you keep doing that it’s going to fall out.”
“What? Oh. You’re probably right. I think I’ve been freakin’ pulling on it since last night. Are you okay?”
“I think so. Why am I in the hospital?”
“What’s the last thing you remember?”
“Damn a question with a question. That’s never a good sign you know.”
“You haven’t lost your snark I see. Seriously babe, what do you remember?”
What didIremember? My brain was stuffed with an old blanket and trying to think was like trying to look at old pictures that were faded and out of focus. “I remember being in the piano bar and you playing piano while you were all singing.”
“That’s it? It’s important. Are you sure you can’t remember anything else?”
I couldn’t. Weird. “I don’t think so. Okay, what the hell is going on? You need to tell me. You’re scaring the shit out of me.”
“Good you’re awake. How are you feeling?” I’d been so focused on Flame I didn’t even hear or see the nurse come in. How I missed the bright pink scrubs, God only knows.
“I’m okay. I think. I don’t know why I’m here.”
“You were unresponsive when the ambulance brought you in. We couldn’t get you to wake up.”
I wanted to say I was clueless but not stupid. I knew what unresponsive was and I was getting pissed, although not at the nurse. Taking a deep breath I tried to unload some of the tension building. It wouldn’t do any good to get pissed off.
“I don’t remember.”
“It’s not surprising. Your blood work came back showing Flunitrazepam.”
“What’s that?”
“Rohypnol.”
It sounded familiar but I couldn’t figure it out. The damn fuzziness in my brain was driving me crazy.
“You were roofied, babe. At least that’s what they think,” Flame said, as his hand rearranged his hair again.
“No way.How?”
“That’s what the cops are trying to find out.”
“The police?”
“I’ll be right back to take your vitals, I’ll also let the doctor know you’re awake.” She smiled at me and left Flame and I alone.
“Yeah. Fuck I really hoped you’d remember more. The cops are going to be in to talk to you too now they know you’re awake. Or maybe they’ll make us go to the station so you can give a statement.”
