“A phone,” I say slowly. “Fuck, this place has a land line.”
Carmine looks over his shoulder and his eyes go wide. “How’d we miss that?” he steps over to it. “Do you think it’s actually active? Some people still have them set up but don’t actually use them.”
“Only one way to find out.” I set the bread back where it was. “Who’s safe to call?”
Carmine chews at his lip. “My brothers are likely to show up guns loaded and make things worse.”
“Rose… You mentioned that my sister told you what Eivor did. So, she must not agree with him either. I remember her number, I’ll give her a call.” I step over to the phone and take it off the hook. I hear the dial tone.
I’m not in the clear yet though. I punch the numbers in and wait.
My sister doesn’t answer.
“Fuck. Come on… Hey, dillweed pick up your phone, this is your brother. I’m stuck in a cabin in the middle of fucking nowhere.” I leave the message and hang up. I look back at Carmine, who is smirking a little bit, but his eyes are concerned.
Forty seconds later, the phone rings. I pick it up quickly.
“Soren?” Rosalie asks.
“Finally. Yeah. Can you trace this address? It’s like two miles…southwest of Tessari bay cliffs,” I tell her.
“Uhh, hold on. Is it a landline? Who still has a landline?” Rose says, and I hear her shuffling around. “Eivor finally let me out of the office, only because I promised him I would tell him if you contacted me.”
“Great. Should I be worried?” I ask her.
“No,” she insists. “I left the second he passed out last night. I’m at an Airbnb. I have my laptop and I think I have the right program to trace the call but it’s going to take a little bit. Whose cabin are you in?”
“No idea, someone who’s gone visiting Sheri this weekend,” I explain casually.
“Who the fuck is Sheri?” she asks.
“Beats me. How long is this going to take, Rose?” I glance at Carmine who is standing there with his hands in his pockets.
“Fuck you, I’m doing the best I can,” she hisses. “I don’t like being chased out of our home either.”
“You weren’t chased, you left. Eivor has people coming after me to kill me, Rose.”
She sighs. “I know. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with him. He raised us. How can you just go after the kids you raised?” she mumbles the last part. “Ah, got it.”
“You’ve got the address?” I ask her.
“No, but the coordinates. I’ll be there in twenty minute according to the map.”
“Good, see you then…unless they get here first,” I tell her.
She hangs up and so do I.
“You think whoever is visiting Sheri is going to notice the extra calls?” I ask.
“If they still have a landline and a physical calendar, I’m guessin’ not,” Carmine says with a chuckle.
“How long?” he asks me.
“Twenty minutes.”
Carmine takes a breath. “Okay. Just twenty minutes. Do we steal this poor person’s food or wait until we get back to my place?”
I raise a brow. “Your place—you think that’s a good idea?”
