I can’t lose Nico. Even if my sister can’t find it in her heart to forgive me. I have to follow my happy, and my happy is with him.

“Looks like I have some planning to do. Wish me luck, ladies.”

Time to show my man I choose him.

thirty-nine

Nico

Alightsheenofsweat covers the back of my neck, and my heart pounds in my ears as the elevator ascends to the penthouse.

At any other time, I’d be thrilled at being home after a week away.

Today is not like any other day. I’m nervous as fuck about what I might find when I arrive on my floor. Or what I might not find.

Savannah.

I miss Savannah like a phantom limb. It killed me to give her space the entire week I was gone. I listened to the guys, and only sent her takeout meals and the reminder not to start any fires in my absence. I asked Roberto to deliver the meals every night, and he seems to think Savannah has softened towards me.

But I’ve yet to get that confirmation for myself.

The elevator dings its arrival, and the ache in my chest grows. Rubbing it with a fist to ease the tightness, I step out into the hallway. Empty. Not even a sliver of light beneath Savannah’s door.

I don’t know what I was expecting; it’s after midnight. She’s probably asleep, resting for an early morning shift at the hospital tomorrow.

Disappointment washes over me as I press my thumb to the lock and enter my apartment. I flick on the entry light as I cross the threshold, dragging my suitcase inside. I close the door and lean my head against the cold metal.

In four, out four.I breathe through the ache in my head and chest.

Four soft knocks rap against my door, and I’m pretty sure I’m losing my mind when her angelic voice calls from the other side. “Nico? Are you there?”

I yank open the door so hard it flies into the wall with a bang.

Savannah’s eyes widen in surprise. “Hey,” she murmurs.

She’s here.

Face bare and in that cute butterfly robe she wore the night she came over to use my shower. Her silky brown hair is twisted into a haphazard knot on the top of her head as she sinks her teeth into her bottom lip. My entire body twitches with the urge to close the distance between us.

“Hey.” It’s all I can manage as my heart pummels at my ribs. Her fingers nervously tug at the belt wrapped around her waist. “You okay?”

“Yep, totally fine.” She nods.

Is she as nervous as I am?

“Good,” I grunt.

The silence stretches.

What the hell do I do?I want to wrap my arms around her body, pull her close, and kiss the ever-loving fuck out of her. But I can’t.

“Are you going to ask me inside or not, baseball boy?” Savannah asks, taking the lead. The amber in her eyes sparkles, and her lips turn up at the corners.

Hope fills me, and I fight a smile as I step aside and wave her in. “Please come in.”

The sweet floral scent of her shampoo fills my nose as she waltzes past me.

Savannah stops at the mouth of my foyer, which leads to my bedroom. She lifts her chin and pulls her shoulders back. “I’m sorry.”
