I tried to doze off but couldn’t. Jordy’s expression niggled at me. Why had he been sad? And what could I do to make him as happy as I felt with him and Laurel in my bed?
When I opened my eyes, I caught him watching me. He was frowning, those black eyebrows I’d admired so much drawn together.
I moved my hand on his hip, just lightly stroking his skin, and tried to smile. Maybe we should talk about what was happening, but we couldn’t now, with Laurel sleeping between us.
So I petted his hip until he closed his eyes again. He didn’t move, but his breathing was quiet and peaceful as it should have been.
Only when I thought he was finally asleep, did I let myself drift.
The next morning, Laurel wasn’t there.
I sat up, looking around. Jordy lay with his back to me, snoring softly. The door to the bathroom was ajar, only darkness inside. Morning sunshine peeked into my bedroom, painting a thick yellow stripe across the wall.
Where was Laurel?
I couldn’t help but feel a bit bereft without him here.
I wondered what Jordy would have done had I spooned him and cuddled him now. I gazed at his bare back, my hands itching to touch. But it was as if Laurel took the possibility with him when he left.
I brushed Jordy’s shoulder, and he turned on his back, peering up at me.
“Huh?”
“Sorry. Laurel isn’t here. Did you see him leave?”
“No.” Jordy sat up and peered around. His hair was matted on one side, sticking out on the other. Adorable.
“I hope he’s not freaking out.”
Jordy didn’t say anything. The more awake he seemed, the more his expression darkened. I didn’t want to make him sad again, dammit. Did he like Laurel too?
Shit. Was he jealous? Did he want Laurel to himself?
The idea made my stomach tighten, panic rising.
It was a nasty fear, but it made a few things abundantly clear in my head.
I wanted Laurel in any way I could have him. But there was no way I was losing Jordy, not under any circumstances. I wanted them both, happy and glowing, like they did when I saw them kiss last night.
And I was done holding back.
I leaned in and pressed a kiss to Jordy’s temple. He jerked with surprise, that sexy mouth falling open. So I kissed him there too, just to make sure he got it.
“You can use my bathroom. I’m going to make us some eggs, and there’s a new brand of cheese in the fridge downstairs. You must try it and tell me what you think.”
With that, I hopped off the bed and pulled my jeans up over my naked ass. Showering could wait until after breakfast. Something told me that if I let him alone long enough, Jordy would escape just like Laurel had.
Downstairs, I started the coffee machine and rooted in the fridge for staples. As I took out the cheese box, I noticed a Post-it taped to the countertop.
My assistant called. I went to check on the chalet. I’ll be back in the afternoon. L
Relieved, I smiled. Laurel didn’t ditch us. He just had stuff to do, and we’d slept way too long. It was nearly eleven.
Jordy walked into the breakfast room, looking a little wary, but then his gaze landed on the cheese box, and everything seemed as it should be.
He cut off a chunk of the new brand I’d bought and groaned.
“Fuck me. That’s delicious.” He eyed the torn package, straightening out the paper so he could read the inscriptions. “Boss, this is the best cheddar I’ve ever eaten. We’re buying this in pounds, okay?”
