That was the only thought in my head as I pushed the door open, pulling Ace with me as I stumbled to the side and then back, slamming it shut behind us without a thought.
Which was when we plunged into complete darkness.
Even Ace paused, both of us silent with only our pants for breath to disturb the blackness of the room. After a second I could make out a little more of the outline of the room thanks to the seep of light under the door, but not enough to safely navigate across to the bed.
Especially given that I was still unsteady on my feet – more so now from Ace’s kisses than the whisky.
“Wh…” Ace started, and I realized he was just as blind as I was.
“Wait,” I said. “I’ll get it.” I fumbled over to the wall, running my hands urgently over the cold, hard surface in search of the light switch as I shrugged my leather jacket off one arm at a time. When I finally found the switch and turned it on without thinking, I instantly winced at the flare of brightness and how the contrast seemed to directly attack my eyeballs.
“Fuck,” Ace muttered, rubbing his hands over his own eyes. I rushed to him – just in time, as he almost fell to the side under what seemed like nothing more than the force of gravity.
“You okay?” I asked.
“Huh?” Ace replied. He removed his hands from his face and squinted at me blearily.
Oh, god.
He was a lot more drunk than I’d thought he was.
We were just talking perfectly normally out there, and…
Had it all hit him at once because he was drinking those sugary cocktails or something?
“C’mere,” he muttered, putting his hands up to the sides of my face. He only just managed to latch onto me before he fell again, pressing his mouth against mine in that knee-weakening way, sweeping all thoughts out of my head.
He was drunk. So drunk. He’d almost fallen over. But…
Oh, god, his kiss.
“W-wait,” I said, managing to get my mouth free for a second and pant for air. “Wait, you… you’re…”
“Come on,” he said, tugging my hand and stepping towards his bed.
I’d wanted to tell him that he was too drunk – that we couldn’t do this. It wasn’t right for me to take advantage of him like this.
But his kiss… it was intoxicating. Even more so than the alcohol. I just wanted to fall into it and never get out again.
Oh, god. I had to be a good person. I had to stop this. There was just no way I could let this be the way we fell into bed together…
Not if I ever wanted to experience that kiss again.
Ace stumbled as he pulled me backward towards the bed, landing on the mattress itself and laughing. He rolled away from me, still holding my hand, pulling me down with him. I was almost powerless to avoid face-planting into the bed, so I did the only logical thing.
I lay down next to him.
Ace rolled towards me, and I tried to think desperately of how I was going to stop him, how I was going to do this without hurting his feelings – if he would even remember this in the morning anyway – and how…
Ace snored lightly.
I looked down at his face, blinking twice. His eyes were closed.
His head rested on my arm, and his breathing was steady.
He’d fallen asleep.
I covered my face with one of my hands. I almost wanted to laugh, but I didn’t want to wake him back up. He was asleep.
