She was The Viper’s property, and according to some primeval vampiric law Augustine owned her. He legally could do anything he wished to her, and there was no repercussions, not until she was strong enough to become her own master. According to his research it was created as a power structure to help the weaker Vamps from killing innocents, which was apparently an issue for several millennia.
It also meant there was nothing Kace could do, not without killing every fucker who tried to stop him. Which was exactly what he planned to do.
“What about drowning in beer? I bet If I called a brewery we could get one of those massive barrels. Just say the word and I’ll hold your head under,” Lucy continued without a care.
“Lucifer,” Kace growled. “Why are you even here?”
He just wanted a little reprieve from his beast before he entered the Pits. But nothing was working, not since he tasted real serenity. Kace always chased the tranquillity of exhaustion, and he had never felt so… calm. Untilher.
He had expected a rough fuck, a quick release of pleasure for them both, but her sharp tongue ignited something inside him that should have been dangerous to any other woman. Yet rather than violence he found himself craving her attention, her eye contact a brand that had seared beneath his skin.
Fucking Eva was like a catharsis, her cries of pleasure purging him of every guilt, bad memory and nightmare until there was nothing left but her. Her scent. Her skin. Her moans.
And he wanted to do it again.
Fuck.
Lucifer let out a low whistle. “Okay, stay with me on this one. What about getting crushed beneath the entire national rugby team?”
Kace stopped his crunches, his breathing heavy as laid flat on the mat.
“I’m pretty confident one of them is an elephant shifter, now that would be interesting to see in a scrum.” Lucifer clicked his tongue, eyes narrowed. “Hey, are you even listening to me?”
If Kace tasted serenity, it was short lived. His beast was riding him hard, harder than he ever had before and if he didn’t concentrate, he would lose. Eva had been a high, but right then he was freefalling into oblivion.
Mine.A growl through his mind, one that he ignored.
“No, I’m not listening,” Kace said through clenched teeth. “I wanted to be alone.”
Lucifer tutted. “Okay, no need to be rude.”
Kace dragged a hand down his face, focused on his breathing. In. Out. In. Out. Maybe he would beat the shit out of Lucy after all. Chase that much needed exhaustion. The thought made him laugh, which caused Lucifer to glance over with a confused expression. In all his years he had never reached peace, and now he had found it in the warmth of a woman. A man who hated touch.
Eva was definitely a disruption he didn’t need, and it was clear that once was never going to be enough.
Mine.
Fuck.
Chapter19
Eva
Darkness was comforting, calling her into its depths as Eva raised an arm, watching as her skin became wrapped in the shadows. It took concentration, the swirling gloom like a blanket that started at her fingertips before moving up her hand to her arm.
“Neat trick,” a low, raspy voice said. “I see you’ve been practicing, now let’s go. ”
Eva released the shadows, stepping back to stare at the security guard, the one who had been with her for the last several days. He was punishment for her feeding, she was sure of it. He was the first to watch her so openly, the others never looking at her directly when she was undressed, too afraid of Augustine. Except this one didn’t skirt his gaze away, his attention remaining on her until it was like barbs beneath her skin.
It made her nervous, that he either didn’t know that she was Augustine’s fledgling, or that he didn’t care. There was something about him, something wrong that kept her on edge. He watched her as she bathed, and even when she slept. Not that she really slept, especially since she had been moved into Augustine’s room inside the tunnels of the Pits. The first night she had remained rigid the whole night, waiting for him to come through the door and get in the bed. She flinched at every creak, knock or groan of the door.
The nameless security tilted his head with a poisonous smile. He wasn’t a vampire, she was sure of it, yet his pulse was slow, sometimes even slower than her own.
He was her chains, and she couldn’t wait for him to be replaced.
“I don’t need an escort, I know the way,” she said when he walked too close.
His reply was a snarl, his hand reaching up to grip her upper arm as he moved her faster down the corridor. “Get in the fucking office.”
