Lucas froze in a way that was unique to vampires, his body so still he appeared as a statue. There was no breathing, no flutter of an eyelid or even a twitch of muscle. The only movement was his eyes, which flicked between Kace and herself.

His smirk was dark, calculated when he finally moved. “I’ll see you around, babe,” he said as he turned towards the mouth of the alley. He disappeared into the street beyond, and only then did Eva allow herself to relax, just a little.

“What was that? Why did you have to make it so much worse,Red?” She purposely used the nickname. “Don’t bother helping next time.”

His eyes snapped to hers, then dropped to the mark on her upper arm that already ached, her pale skin easily bruised. “Sure.”

Just a one-word response, and it heightened her already simmering anger.

“What the hell?” She moved closer, noticing how he stepped back at the same time. “What are you even doing here?”

“I didn’t realise you owned the city,” he said, the words edging towards a growl. “I’ll remember to ask permission next time I want to speak to an acquaintance.”

Eva let out a frustrated scream. “You’re such an arsehole! Don’t bother helping next time.”

A snigger. “Noted.”

His dark green eyes held a glimmer of unpredictability, like a predator sizing up his prey. It was even more frustrating that they fascinated her, even as his manner pissed her off.

“Careful,” he said, his tone deepening at her attention. “We don’t want a repeat of last time.”

Eva blinked, and the memory of his lips against hers, of his tongue dominating her mouth in powerful thrusts that made her try and pull him closer flashed inside her mind. She couldn’t remember the conversation right then, or what had even led to the situation, but she had melted at the touch. She was an embarrassing puddle when he lifted her, his fingers beneath her skirt within seconds. And then his tongue...

Eva swallowed her moan, hoping the burn from her cheeks didn’t give her away. It had all happened in the hall, where anyone could see him on his knees with her leg slung over his shoulder.

Luckily, Kyra had come home and interrupted what clearly would have been a huge mistake. That was all it was, a giant, humongous error in her judgment. She clearly hadn’t been thinking straight when she wrapped her hand around his…

Oh my god, stop it Eva!

Kace stepped forward, his voice dropping as the harsh light above cast shadows across his sharp cheekbones. “Or is that exactly what you want?”

The man infuriated her, so why did her traitorous thighs press together in anticipation?

Eva fought an embarrassing moan. She needed to get laid, but not by the man who stood with a permanent scowl before her.

“You wish,” she said in a suspiciously husky tone. “You couldn’t handle me.”

Fuck. Me. Sideways. It had sounded like a challenge, and that was not her intention. What the fuck was with her attraction to hot, dangerous guys?

His eyes narrowed, and she hoped like god that he couldn’t read her mind.

“So yeah, erm, thanks for that,” she said quickly, clearing her throat.

“Is that Vamp going to cause you problems?” Kace dropped his gaze, and Eva swore she felt it burn across her skin.

“No I doubt I’ll see him again. He’ll find someone else to play with and then forget about me.” She needed a shower. Cold. “I’m going home now. So… bye.”

She didn’t wait, just jogged out front towards to her car. It was late, and even in a city that never really slept it didn’t take her long to get to her building, parking in a space that was surprisingly close to the entrance.

Even the distance hadn’t dampened her embarrassment, nor the arousal that just made it that much worse.

“What’s wrong with me?” she groaned, settling her head against the leather of the steering wheel. Kace was a mystery, a grumpy arsehole who scowled at her more than smiled. So why was her body ready to climb him like a mountain?

‘To be fair, you threatened him with a wok the first time you met.’Kyra’s voice drifted into her head so clear it was like she was sitting beside her. She hadn’t seen her friend in weeks, which meant they were due to schedule their bad TV and takeaway night. It was something they used to do all the time, but since Kyra had moved away a few months ago and was busy doing whatever job she did for The Magicka, they never seemed to have the same free time. It sucked, but she was happy for her friend. She deserved happiness more than anyone.

Maybe I can ask her about Kace?she thought to herself as she began to climb the stairs to her floor before quickly squashing the notion. No, that was a bad idea. She didn’t need complicated, moody men in her life. Even ones who were as damn sexy as him. No, it looked like it was just her and her battery-operated boyfriend. B.O.B would never judge her angry sex fantasy about a tall, irritating man who she knew nothing about.

With a dramatic sigh she opened her front door, the automatic light in the corner flicking to life when she moved inside. She was acting like a woman in heat.
