Kyra’s brow creased. “I can’t use a gun.”

“Would you prefer up close and personal with a knife?” His tone hardened as he said it, knowing he would never allow her close to anyone who would cause her harm. “A monkey can fucking shoot. There’s a reason guns are illegal on the streets, Princess.”

Kyra flicked her gaze to the knife on the floor, and then to the Fae, her skin becoming even paler if that was even possible.

He reached for her free hand. “Come on, we can’t stay here.” He turned to leave just as Kyra gave a resistant tug.

“There’s druids, two in the basement and the other one…” Her voice was rushed, the words tumbling together.

“We will take care of it,” he said before he reached for his brothers, opening a joint connection, the mental bond immediate.

‘Druid hostages in the basement. Two with a possible third.’

He didn’t wait for a reply as he pulled her back towards the door, and out into the hall. The dark interior was covered in white powder, and when Kyra’s eyes widened at the sight he couldn’t help but smirk.

“Powder bomb,” he shrugged. “Great at detecting something that we can’t see.” It also made footprints visible, giving him some advantage against the invisible bastards. “Kace’s handy with this type of shit.” Or explosives in general.

Their shoes crunched against the powder, Kyra rigid beside him, her eyes so wide he could finally see the whites peeking through.

‘This place is fucking huge,’Kace growled inside his mind.‘There’s three levels beneath the warehouse still under construction.’

‘Take images for our records,’Riley added. ‘Then plant the charges and get outside. Our cover’s been blown, they know we’re here.’

Xander drowned them out as they continued towards the front door. He wasn’t surprised Kyra hadn’t been able to find it, not when the farmhouse had been arranged like a bloody labyrinth, with random doors and halls leading to nothing. The front door had been sealed shut with paint, and then blocked off with wood. He hadn’t cared about the noise as he had kicked it open, the almost physical need to find her driving him forward, making him careless.

“How did you get in?” Her voice was barely a whisper, and yet she held his beast’s entire attention.

“A door.”

Kyra’s lip twitched, and even more of the black in her eyes had receded, hinting at the amber irises beneath. He wanted to kiss her, to press his lips against hers until she felt nothing but him. Thought of nothing but him.

Fuck!he thought, shaking his head.Concentrate!

Xander paused, pushing them both flat against a wall as he cocked his head and listened. Sound didn’t seem to travel too well throughout the farmhouse, but he knew from the aerial view Titus managed to create that the entrance to the warehouse was close, his brother a genius when it came to computers.

Xander didn’t want her anywhere near the warehouse, not when they had yet to find Dirk or Bane, the wraith prick. He knew about Daemons, having been trained to fight them for almost twenty years. Fae, on the other hand were a mystery, especially fucking wraiths.

“Do you know the layout?” he asked quietly.

Xander had quickly searched the available rooms, each more dilapidated than the last. The dust was so thick he knew it hadn’t been used in months, at least until hefeltKyra like a spark across his chi. He had followed that feeling until he found the smallest gap behind a bookshelf, the room beyond a void.

Kyra shook her head. “I was kept in one of the rooms in the other hall.”

He was surprised to find her there, or in the large house at all compared to the strong structure of the warehouse beside it. That was built with a purpose compared to the crumbling building around them, and despite the amount of men that they had taken down the whole operation felt unfinished.

‘Watch yourselves, this place reeks of a trap,’he shot down the joint connection. He finally released Kyra’s hand, pulling one of his blades from its holster, the weight familiar in his palm.

Xander picked up speed, retracing his steps to find the front door he had previously broken. Kyra followed quickly behind, both hands around her gun as she kept it pointed towards the floor. He never had a fantasy, but a beautiful half-naked woman holding a gun was something he was going to remember forever.

“You okay?” she asked with a frown.

He should have offered her his fucking shirt. “Let’s get out of here.” He carefully opened the door with a boot, throwing out one of Titus’s new handmade toys through the threshold. The small bomb exploded with a soft pop, and white powder shot in all directions. Kyra lifted her gun at the same time Xander moved forward, slicing with his dagger as three men were revealed. Only one was a wraith, the other two wearing clothes designed to blend into the night, their faces painted.

It was an ambush.

What a fucking surprise.

His blade sunk into the closet man, the life behind his eyes vanishing within seconds before he moved on to the next. The moon high above gave little illumination, but enough to notice the glitter in the powder. Kace was an unpredictable bastard who loved pain, but you couldn’t say he didn’t have a sense of humour. Or Lucy had gotten into his shit again.
