Kyra was unable to look at him, her heart beating violently in her chest. Closing her eyes she tried to calm her pulse, but it only made her achingly aware of the hands that brushed her inner thighs.
She was going to hyperventilate if she didn’t calm down.
“You’re done,” he said. “You’re welcome.”
She would have thanked him despite the sarcasm, but she couldn’t trust her voice right then, and instead she concentrated on just breathing. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but she was calmer when she reopened her eyes, and found herself alone.
Chapter13
Kyra
“This is a waste of time,” Xander grunted, arms crossed as they stood outside the Supernatural Intelligence Bureaus tower. “We need to get started on those threats, not run some errands.”
“This isn’t an errand, and I need to keep everything as normal as possible,” she said, looking up at him. His face was furrowed with impatience, but at least his eyes were back to ice, well, before he hid them behind his sunglasses, the morning sun bright. “I have to meet with the Commissioner.”
“That tosser, why?”
She decided not to answer, instead scratching at her thigh, the wound healing much faster than usual. Her leg felt strong, the bandage not too tight beneath her jeans.
“Why The Tower?” Xander continued after a pregnant pause. “They don’t hire dark witches.”
She noticed he called her dark, and not black.
“I’m specially licenced,” she said, lips pursed. “Also things cost money, like food and rent.”
She had been commissioned by S.I, and more recently been asked to support cases with Spook Squad, The Metropolitan Police’s Breed team. However, the commissioner for S.I. had started offering her out for certain services. It blurred the line on what she was allowed to practice, but they hadn’t left her with many options.
Xander grunted. “You seem to be fine with Ravyns.”
Kyra tightened her smile. “I would rather not earn money that way if I can help it, and it’s not like I can spend Ravyns down my local corner shop.”
“Then what exactly do you do for S.I.?”
“Does it matter?”
He just crossed his arms, eyebrow raised as he waited.
Kyra let out a sound of frustration. “Fine, I work with the dead.”
Xander visibly cringed, his upper lip curled. “Of course you do.”
She had met many people who had taken an instant dislike to her because of what she was, but never had anyone been so open with it. Xander seemed to take it to the next level, as if her very existence disgusted him.
“You can wait here, I shouldn’t be long,” she said after they entered the atrium and she signed in with the security at the desk.
“How am I supposed to protect you if I’m down here?” His impatient growl forced her attention.
“I’m not a defenceless child.”
He leaned forward, his tone dropping impossibly deeper. “I’m very much aware of that fact.”
Kyra froze, able to feel his hot gaze across every inch of her skin.
What was he doing? Surely he wasn’t cruel enough to tease her that way?
A blush burned against her cheeks, which made it even worse when Xander smirked.
“Ma’am,” the guard interrupted, his eyes flickering between the both of them. “Is everything alright?”
