“How about I come out for a visit? We can go see a show.As long as it’s not one of those stripper ones.”

It was a sweet offer, but she knew he had ulterior motives behind it.He would use it as an excuse to look for Rob.“Another time.I have a lot going on right now, and you have a baby to plan for.”

“How about Cora and I both come out and visit? We get drunk and do the wedding.Win-win,” he suggested as if it were the greatest plan.

“Cora will never sign off on a Vegas wedding.”She was a traditionalist.“And she’ll never forgive you if you do it drunk.”

“Maybe—”

“Liam,” June cut him off before he suggested something else as an excuse to come out, “I appreciate your concern and wanting to help, but I’m fine.I’m not the first woman who has been dumped, or ghosted, or whatever you want to call it.It sucks, but I’ll get over it.”

“I know you will, June bug. You’re one of the strongest women I know.”

“Thanks, Liam.”She smiled, but it barely made her lips lift. She knew Liam was trying to cheer her up, but she had a long way to go before she could be happy again.Rob wasn’t the first failed relationship, but he was the first guy she’d had deep feelings for, so it hurt worse than the relationships before. She just needed time to move on.

“If you change your mind and want him punished for breaking your heart, just remember, I’m a call away.No one will ever find the body.”

June laughed at the offer. The first time she had laughed in two weeks even though her brother was probably half serious.“I’ll keep that in mind.I have to go.Send Cora my love.”

“Bye, June bug.”

Chapter 29

“You still haven’t heard anything from him?”Karla asked as they sat around June’s living room.June didn’t have the energy or desire to go out.The girls refused to leave her alone, so they came over to her place to help console her with several large bottles of wine.

“No.”June’s voice was as hollow and void as her heart was.She didn’t think Rob was capable of something like this, but she couldn’t refute the facts. He had ghosted her.Rob had gotten what he’d wanted out of her and left. She hadn’t seen him or any of his friends at the office as if all of them were avoiding her.

A small part of her had hoped he would call her and apologize, say he’d been in a car accident or something.A coma that he had only just woken from, and this was the first chance he’d had to talk to her.But she was only fooling herself.Rob wasn’t coming back into her life.At this point, she didn’t want him to.

“I’m so sorry, June,” Sue said, looking disheartened.

“We should go over to his house and TP it or something.Oh, or key his car.”Karla’s face lit up with glee at the prospect of destroying Rob’s things.

“No.”June didn’t want to deface his property. She was above such things. She was shocked Karla would even suggest such a thing. She expected that kind of suggestion from Casey, not her.

“Alright, enough,” Casey snapped, standing up and staring down at June with a look of determination.“It’s time you stop moping and focus on other things. He’s not worth the time and energy, June.Don’t let him get the better of you.As the saying goes, there are plenty of fish in the ocean.”

Casey was right. Not that she was ready to start dating, but June needed to stop feeling sorry for herself and nursing a broken heart. She was sure Rob had already moved on.“You’re right. No more feeling sorry for myself,” she spoke up, feeling more confident.

“That’s the spirit,” Casey cheered her on.

“Obviously, he wasn’t the one,” Sue chimed in.

“No, but the right one is out there somewhere.Or several someones.”Casey winked coyly at her.

“Let’s drink to that.”Karla raised her wine glass, and the rest joined her.

June loved these women more than anything. She didn’t know what she would do without them to talk to and get their advice.

Chapter 30

It felt good to be home. The mission had taken much longer to complete than planned. There had been several setbacks on the transportation not arriving, breaking down, as well as the target wasn’t where he was supposed to be.The target had been tipped off of their arrival, and it became a game of cat and mouse for almost three weeks and across several countries. But now Duane Flagg was in custody, and they had been cleared to come home.

Rob was anxious to see June.He missed her kisses and floral scent.Three weeks without her bright smile had been hell.It was over now.He was home. She might be a little peeved at him for not contacting her over the past three weeks, but he had the perfect excuse.

“Someone looks excited to be home,” Jack ribbed him as they disembarked from the plane. They still had to debrief, but within a few hours, he could see June.He should probably text her to let her know he hadn’t died.Actually, on second thought, a call was better.

“Three weeks away from my girl, yeah.”
