“I haven’t decided.I should consult Dr.Shane about what she’s capable of.I don’t want to push her into moves she can’t do and make her regret having me teach her.”This was tougher than he had first thought it would be.
For one thing, he’d never trained someone on self-defense, only on combat training like shooting and capture evasion. This was out of his wheelhouse, but he was willing to adjust.
He had taken his combat training and learned to adapt it to his fake ear.He could do the same with June he was pretty sure.
“I’ll go with you,” Drew offered.“I need to talk to her anyway.”
“Didn’t you just see her?”Jack cocked his head to look at Drew.
“So what, are you my keeper?”Drew glowered at him.Jack held his hands up in surrender.
“That’s fine.We can go in the morning.I’m teaching June tomorrow evening.”He didn’t have time to go today as he had some work still to do here.Work he had pushed off and was now getting a death glare from Luke because he wasn’t doing it.
Rob returned his gaze back to his computer and did some actual work.He would learn more about June tomorrow when he saw her along with whatever he could glean from Dr.Shane.
Chapter 8
“There’s my favorite doctor,” Rob greeted Dr.Shane with a wide smile as he stepped into her office.
Dr.Shane looked up from the paperwork she had been working on at her desk to his and Drew’s entrance. She sat back in her chair with her arms crossed, looking amused.“Rob.Drew.”Drew nodded his head at her.Her gaze softened when it landed on Drew before giving Rob a cynical look.“What do you want?”
“Can’t we just want to visit?”Rob questioned, trying to sound offended but knowing he was failing.
“No,” she replied quickly. So much for relying on her good nature.
“We—I need intel.”It was only him; Drew had wanted to tag along for his own reasons.
“Isn’t that your department?”she asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Normally, yes, but it’s about one of your employees, so I figured I’d come straight to the source.”
“You can’t convince me any of my staff is doing anything illegal.”
“I’m not.”
“How did he rope you into this?”she inquired, shifting her gaze to Drew.
“He didn’t.I volunteered since I wanted to talk to you about my hand.”He held up his hand that was missing fingers. The doctor had designed prosthetic fingers for his hand.He had been seeing a physical therapist to get used to it.Rob wondered if he was seeing June.He hadn’t even thought to ask.
“We can discuss that in a minute.Have a seat.”She looked back at Rob.“Who do you need intel on?”
“June Macintosh.”
Dr.Shane raised a skeptical eyebrow.“Why do you need intel on her?”
Rob should have known Dr.Shane wouldn’t make this easy on him.“I’m helping her with some self-defense and since you are her doctor, I was wondering if you would share her range of motion.”
Rob tried hard not to squirm under Dr.Shane’s penetrating gaze.It was like going to the drill sergeant’s office again.“Have you thought about asking her yourself?”
No.“You’re her doctor; I figured you would know her chart best. What she is capable of.”
“Everything,” Dr.Shane said easily.“There is little that woman cannot do,” Dr.Shane stated proudly before leaning over her desk with her hands folded on top, looking mischievous.“Why the sudden urge to teach her defense?”
Rob didn’t want the doctor to get ideas. He hadn’t used defense as a ploy to get close to June.He was just being helpful.Nothing more.“I came upon her in a position that required my assistance. She made the suggestion of learning defense, and I offered. But before I teach her, I wanted to gauge where her range of motion was before beginning so I could plan accordingly.”
“She was attacked,” she commented in an even tone, though Dr.Shane’s face was a mask of anger.
“She was.”It wasn’t Rob’s place to go into detail nor did Dr.Shane need to know the specifics.“I just want to teach her enough to protect herself.I know with a guy’s amputations, they have decent range of motion, but she’s a double amputee.I could focus on arm jabs, but I want to give her a range of defenses including legs if she can do it.”
