“Yeah, you should.” Greg sat up and leaned toward her. His tone had turned husky. He was obviously of the same mind.

Zoe glanced at the clock. “I can spare a few more minutes.”

Greg smiled wickedly, making her sex clench and think of naughty things. “Oh, kitten, it will take half of that to make you come.”

Chapter 14

Greg’s body hummed as he walked into his office building. He’d been hard-pressed to let Zoe leave for the mansion a short while ago. He’d wanted to go with her but knew it was a risk they couldn’t take if they were seen. He was the driver and would have no reason to be seen around the property this late at night.

As much as he wanted to protect her, he trusted Zoe to look after herself. She had said she’d snuck in and out more than once. Though now there were increased guards. Still, bottom line, he had to trust her. He couldn’t hover over her like a mother hen trying to protect her all the time.

It was close to midnight and he should be thinking about sleep, but he needed to check in and tell Luke the latest developments. They had never had to join forces with other law enforcement. The general wasn’t going to like this. In fact, he may pull them. Not that Greg had any intention of going anywhere. Zoe needed backup. Her people couldn’t get close enough to the mansion to help her if she were ever in a crisis. He could. He wasn’t going to abandon her.

Greg wasn’t surprised to find Luke and Shay here. Luke was always here and now that he had Shay in his life, she was never far away. He probably kept her here to keep a close eye on her. Not because he was afraid she’d be kidnapped again, but because he liked keeping her close and safe. Shay didn’t seem to mind. She was also a huge help to them with her development law knowledge. She had helped solve the case for them a few weeks back when she’d cracked the anagram of a crime boss’s name attached to a title of property.

The two were huddled up at his desk looking at a computer screen. Shay was pointing to things and talking softly. Luke nodded along.

Shay said looking up at his approach, a grin on her face. “Hey, Greg.”

“Hey, Shay.” He returned her grin as he took a seat across from Luke’s desk. “Luke.” He nodded.

Luke eyed him warily. He knew this wasn’t a social call. “Report.” He didn’t bother sending Shay away. She pretty much knew all of their secrets. Well, most. She didn’t want to know the gory details of their missions.

“The girl I’m driving is a DEA agent.”

At first, Luke didn’t react. Not even the batting of an eyelash. Greg knew he had heard what he’d said so he didn’t bother repeating himself. After five years of working closely with this team, they all knew each other well. Luke was absorbing the information and trying to compute it. Greg had done the same thing listening to Zoe as she’d talked to her boss. Zoe hadn’t schooled her shock as well when he’d told her who he really was. Luke wasn’t going to like that detail. Their job depended on their secrecy, and he’d told an outsider.

True, Luke had told Shay, but she was his girlfriend and could be trusted. Zoe was…he didn’t know what to call Zoe. She wasn’t a one-night stand; he had every intention of repeating tonight. They weren’t a couple by any means. He didn’t know how to label them. The point was, Luke trusted Shay to keep his secrets. Greg trusted Zoe to do the same with his.

“How did you come to learn this information?”

“We were attacked earlier today.”

“Oh my god,” Shay gasped in horror. “Are you okay?”

Luke quirked an eyebrow. “And I’m just learning about this now why?” His tone was still neutral. He wasn’t prone to rash emotions. He preferred to have all the facts before making a judgment. It was one of the things that made him a great leader.

“It’s been a busy day. After the car chase and all.”

“Car chase?” Shay asked, sounding shocked now.

“We went back to Maxim’s,” Greg continued. “He questioned me about what happened. I

went to check on Zoe to make sure she was alright and not having any lasting trauma.”

“After a car chase?” Luke didn’t hide his sardonic tone. “Instead of calling me with a report?”

“My car was hit, and she was kidnapped. She was my first priority.”

Luke glared up at Greg. “I feel like you’re leaving a lot out of this story.”

He was. Might as well get the whole debriefing out of the way. “Fine, we went to a pickup and met with Zoe’s old boss Viktor. He’s staying in town for a few days and making arrangements for a meet with Diego Fuentes.”

Luke’s eyebrows shot up. “Maxim, Diego, and Viktor are all meeting together in a few days?”

“I don’t know about Maxim. He’s been hesitant about this joining. The son Leo is supposed to be seeing over everything.”

“And you couldn’t lead with that? Greg, this is huge.” Luke sat up in his chair, his arms resting on top of the desk, his hands folded. “I need the details of the meeting. Everyone who will be there. Where it’s going to be.”
