“Still think I’m paranoid?” He gave her a smirk that made her roll her eyes. She was not about to admit he was right. “Hold on.” Logan turned right and switched gears, picking up speed. The car pulled behind them and started gaining.
Logan took the next left, ignoring the blare of the horn of the car he’d cut off. He went into a zone as he drove down the streets at breakneck speeds. Thankfully there weren’t any pedestrians.
The car following them sped up and then they were side to side.
“Those are the same guys from last night,” Zoe stated in shock. It couldn’t be a coincidence they were still after her.
The passenger window of the car rolled down, and the person in the passenger seat pulled out a gun and aimed it right at Logan.
“Oh hell no,” he muttered and slammed on the brakes as he turned right, heading down another side street.
It only took a few seconds for the car to reverse and come after them. Logan turned left and took another right just before he heard the sound of shots. These guys weren’t playing around.
Logan took another turn, making sure to keep the cars far enough apart that the car pursuing them couldn’t get a shot at his car. He knew these streets like the back of his hand. When he’d moved here a few years ago, he’d made sure to study them.
Logan pulled onto a main street after a few minutes. “I think we lost them,” he announced, scanning his surroundings and not seeing the blue sedan.
“Good job, driver. I might keep you around yet.”
Logan grinned when Zoe’s lip twitched. His grin died when he heard the rev of an engine before seeing a car come barreling down behind them in the rearview mirror.
“Shit.” The chase was on again. Logan led them down several more streets, but even he had to admit these guys were good. They stayed close behind him, not giving him a chance to break free.
The car clipped the back end of his, threatening to send them into a spin out. Logan kept a firm hand on the steering wheel and kept them on the road. Zoe let out a soft squeal, her hand grabbing the door handle for stability. He needed to end this quickly. Not only for their safety and those that could be happening by, there was also his car to think about. His teeth gnashed thinking about the damage to the bumper.
Logan took another turn down a narrow alley that ran behind several businesses before they could be side swiped again.
“Logan…” Zoe’s voice was full of concern. For good reason. An unloading truck was just up ahead coming from another side street and starting to back up, blocking the path of the alley.
Logan shifted gears and pressed his foot further down on the gas. They would make it. A person was standing at the back of the truck waving them off. It became a game of chicken. Logan wasn’t slowing and the truck wasn’t stopping.
They passed the van just inches before it would have hit them. It forced the car behind them to stop or cause a crash. “Now we’ve lost them.”
Logan drove down several more streets and pulled over on the side of the road. He didn’t turn the car off, just parked it and left the engine running.
“What are you doing?” Why were they stopping? They’d just escaped. Now wasn’t the time to stop. They needed to get back to the mansion where she could make a plan.
“Stopping so we can talk. Once we reach the mansion, you’ll avoid me.” He would be right, but how he knew that she didn’t know.
“We have to get back to the mansion,” she tried dissuading him. “No one would dare chase us there.”
“This won’t take long.” He turned in his seat, one hand draped over the steering wheel, the other on the gear shift. She hated that she noticed his long tapered fingers. She’d seen firsthand how lethal those hands were, not only in hand to hand combat but also evasive maneuvers. He definitely knew how to handle a car. He was no run of the mill, hired for help guy. “Who are those guys?”
That question was like a splash of cold water. “What makes you think I know anything about those guys? Just because they’ve come after me twice doesn’t mean that I know them.”
“But you recognize them.” He gave her a stern look much like a father catching his child trying to lie to him.
“Maxim has many enemies; I don’t know all of them, but I know the type.”
“Stop fucking around, Zoe. You know them.” He never raised his voice, but it was hard enough to cut steel. He wasn’t buying her bullshit.
“They are from a small gang. Kind of like pirates. They only come out for big scores. Easy money or ransoms. Low risk but high reward.”
“Going after you isn’t low risk.”
“Both times they’ve come after me, I’ve only had one person with me. I’d call that a low risk.”
Logan looked offended that she didn’t consider him a risk. She did. She had seen what he could do against two men. His knife skills were pretty impressive too.
