Greg didn’t believe for a second she was there to try on clothes. He could see her through the glass door as a saleswoman came up to her and talked to her. Zoe glanced over at him before following the woman around the corner and out of sight.
Greg could go inside and follow her, but he knew she wouldn’t appreciate that. If he wanted her to trust him and start letting him tag along to meetings with her, he had to be patient.
He would be apprehensive if their roles were reversed.
Greg checked his watch and leaned against the car, crossing his ankles, and waited. He tracked everyone that came in and out. Making mental notes of faces. He would have to talk to Luke about this place and see if Shay could get any intel on who owned it. Maybe get a camera set up.
Greg looked up and down the street and noted a car half a block down facing him. Two people sat in the car. They didn’t even try to look inconspicuous as they watched him. He couldn’t see their faces, but he somehow knew they were there because of Zoe.
Perhaps the same guys from last night?
“Come on, Zoe,” he mumbled under his breath. He didn’t like standing out here in the open. Greg had a gun in the car and a new knife tucked into his belt loop, but he didn’t want this to end in a shootout on a public street.
Finally, she emerged. He noticed she wasn’t carrying anything. So not a pickup. She hadn’t gone in with anything either, so not a drop-off. What the hell had she been doing in there?
He glanced over at the car and saw it and its occupants were in the same position. If they were waiting for Zoe, they didn’t show it. They were just far enough away he couldn’t tell if they were even looking at him. Maybe he was being paranoid.
“What is it?” Zoe asked when Greg came to meet her halfway out of the door.
“It could be nothing, but across the street…five cars down. The blue sedan.”
Zoe cocked her head to where he’d said the car was ever so slightly. To any onlooker, they wouldn’t have noticed the move. “What about it?”
He guided her into the car, trying to appear as casual as possible. “Don’t you see the two people sitting inside?”
“Yes, what about them? You think they are here for us,” she answered for herself.
“I do.” There was no point lying about it.
“Logan, there is a chance it’s a coincidence and they aren’t here for us.” She didn’t seem at all concerned that those people could be following them. She might not have any concern for her safety, but he did. He’d rather err on the side of caution.
“It could be a coincidence, but what’s the likelihood after almost being kidnapped last night and now two people are just sitting in a car not moving?” His gut told them they were in danger. The sooner they were back at the mansion, the better. “I’d feel better if we headed back to the mansion.” These two wouldn’t get close enough to the mansion, especially with the firepower there.
“You want to tell Maxim you missed a pickup because your spidey-senses were tingling?” she questioned, half turning in her seat to look at him.
“It’s not tingling, and I don’t have spidey-senses.” Greg barely spared her a side-eye glance. No, he didn’t want to tell Maxim he’d missed a pickup. Especially on his first day. Maxim would appreciate it less if anything happened to Zoe though too.
He’d never felt so conflicted. He should harden his heart to her and stick to his plan and get her back to the mansion as quickly as possible. He never second-guessed himself. Damn it, he knew he was going to regret this.
“Fine, we’ll go,” he growled.
“Duh,” she said as if that was always a given.
“Where is the meeting at?” he asked instead of acknowledging her comment.
Zoe gave him the address. He recognized the street name. It wasn’t too far away.
He fired up the engine and eased into traffic.Greg glanced in the rearview mirror but didn’t see the car following them. Maybe he’d been wrong.
“See, I told you,” she said in a sing-song voice.
“There’s nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution,” he grumbled in response.
“And I appreciate that. Under normal circumstances, I would have agreed to go back to the mansion, but I can’t miss this meeting.”
“So you’ve said. But tell me this. Is whoever you’re meeting worth the risk of getting kidnapped, if not worse?”
“What, like kill me?” She actually chuckled. “No one would be stupid enough, but yes they are.”
