“The destination.”

Greg turned his head to ask her, “Are you always this obtuse?”

“Are you always this inquisitive?” she quipped back, turning to look at him.

“Yes,” he answered honestly. It had driven his commanding officer crazy at first, but he’d learned to answer what he could instead of just giving vague information. Greg didn’t like to do something unless he knew why. If he was going to be a driver, he wanted to know what all he would be transporting.

They seemed to have a stare down before the corner of Zoe’s lip tipped in a half smile. “Then you’ll be sorely disappointed.” Yeah, he’d figured this wouldn’t be a walk in the park. “That’s not a deal breaker, is it?”

He didn’t like it, but it was one step closer to getting answers. “No, Silver. It’s not.”

Her face turned sour when he used her nickname. He didn’t like it, but he wanted to see her reaction to him using it. “Zoe. Call me Zoe.”

“I heard Aleksei call you Silver.”

“He’s the only one I allow to do so.”

“Got it. So, Zoe, what’s your story?”

“My story?” she repeated as if she hadn’t heard him correctly.

“Yeah, if I’m going to be driving you around, I’d like to know more about you.”

“You don’t need to know anything about me. Just where we’re going.” Her tone didn’t broach for disagreement. She was a secretive woman. He wondered why that was. It seemed there was more to it than just being close partners with Maxim.

“Come on. We’ll trade off. I’ll tell you something about me, and you can tell me something about you.”

“I don’t want to know anything about you,” she contradicted.

“Ouch,” he said in a mocking pained tone as he clutched his chest.

Zoe rolled her eyes before turning in her seat so her whole upper torso was facing him. “Fine, there is one thing I want to know.”

“What’s that?” Greg didn’t know if he liked that tone. Had he bitten off more than he could chew?

“Why did you want to work for Maxim?”

“I’ve told you.”

“He’s not the only club owner in town or the only one shipping drugs. So why Maxim?”

Damn, she was observant. Far more than he’d given her credit for. “Most of the others are small time. Not as well known or established. Over the past few months that he’s been here, he’s expanded to several clubs. He’s a smart businessman. Those that work for him seem well taken care of.”

“But you don’t seem to be in need of funds.”

“Why? Because I drive a nice car? There you go again, judging without knowing everything. Thinking I’m a certain type.”

“I’m sorry.” Her face was crestfallen. “It’s an occupational hazard. Normally I can read people but with you, there’s nothing. I’m having trouble figuring you out.”

“Well, that makes two of us. Now I have a question for you. Why did you approach me at the bar?”

“Pass.”

“What is this, junior high? You can’t pass.”

“You didn’t make that part of your rules that I had to answer the question, just that we take turns.”

Damn, once again she was proving a worthy adversary. “Fine, I’m adding it on.”
