“I love you,” he said when he finally came up for air.
“I love you too.”
“Are you sure about this? Giving up your career.”
“I’m not giving up anything. I’m gaining, if anything. I’m tired of being someone else.”
Greg slid a thumb over her cheek. “You only ever have to be yourself with me.”
“Even if I don’t know who I really am?” She’d been undercover so much and had so many personas for hiding who she really was, she didn’t know anymore.
“You do,” he assured her. “And if you ever get that itch for undercover work, you can always help us.”
It was more than she could ever hope for. A man who loved and accepted her as she was, and even offered for her to go undercover whenever she wanted and not because she had to. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Not true. We deserve each other.”
“That is true.” They were perfect for each other. Both complementing each other. Keeping the other on their toes. Challenging each other and keeping the other in line.
“By agreeing to stay, you know you’re stuck with me now. You were as soon as you said you loved me, but just so were clear.”
“Forever, I hope.”
He snuggled her back on his chest. Both content to just lay there. “Forever.”
It didn’t seem long enough for her.
Greg’s phone rang, pulling them from their perfect moment.
“Yeah…what? Okay, thanks.”
“What was that about?” Zoe asked when he hung up. Sitting up to see his face, she knew it couldn’t be good by the look of worry on Greg’s face.
“Diego escaped custody.”
That made her sit the whole way up. “Well, you know you aren’t going after him without me.”
The corner of his lip twitched. “Wouldn’t dream of it, kitten. I’ll have everyone come over in a little bit, and we can make a plan.” He tried pulling her back down, but Zoe resisted.
“Now isn’t the time to rest. We have to start working right now.” Her mind was already whirling about where to look. She was still part of the DEA for the next few weeks, so she still had her clearance to look into surveillance.
“Babe, lay back down,” he urged patiently.
“But we have plans to make,” she pouted, hating how easily he could push her back down. She was still weak from her injury.
“We will,” he assured her. “Later. With the team.”
“No, we need to get a jumpstart.”
“I see I need to distract you.” He leaned over her and started trailing kisses down her neck.
“But…” Her words trailed off. Her protest already becoming faint.
He reached her errant nipple and took it in his mouth. “But what, kitten?” He released her nipple with a pop.
Zoe gave up the fight. Life would never be easy for them, but at least they would do it together. As a team. Zoe couldn’t ask for more.
“Never mind.”
