“Really well, Zoe was showing me the normal routes to and from the night clubs. I think there is some room for change.” He made sure to keep bent over the desk so his erection wasn’t evident.

“Zoe, are you amendable to those changes?”

“I am.” Her composure was back, and she straightened up and moved away from the desk. Her head held high looking every inch the head of operations as she had since the moment he’d met her. “Come along, Logan, I don’t have all day.”

Greg’s erection hadn’t completely deflated, but it was less evident so he followed behind. Zoe strutted ahead, never looking back as they exited the house and stopped. “Which car are we taking?”

“I have a rental until mine is fixed. It’s that one.” He pointed at a little sports car parked at the base of the stairs. It wasn’t his Aston Martin, but it would do for now. He tried not to think what the bill was going to be. Good thing he had a friend who was a mechanic who could order what he needed and allow Greg to do the labor himself.

“Let’s go then. I have a schedule to keep,” she said primly, as if he hadn’t just made her come on his hands a few moments ago. He was impressed with the show she was putting on. He was almost buying that she hated him.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Are you ever going to talk to me or just continue to ride in silence?” he asked. It was eerily quiet in the car as they drove through the streets. He usually enjoyed silence and not mindless chatter, but Zoe’s silence was making him uncomfortable.

“What happened in Maxim’s office can never happen again,” she said in a hollow tone.

“I know.” He did. He shouldn’t have done it to begin with, even if he couldn’t muster regretting it. “It won’t.”

“Good.”

“Is that all you’re going to say to me?” he asked, glancing over at her before shifting his eyes back onto the road.

“That’s all that needs to be said. We need to get back into the role of driver and client. Too much is at stake, Greg.”

“I can compartmentalize the two.” Zoe gave him a side look. “Your office notwithstanding. I can play the role of quiet chauffeur, but we are partners in this. I want to help you take down Maxim.” He understood her wanting to keep the two separate. Their working together and their roles, but she was more than just keeping things separate; she was shutting him out completely. After their talk last night, he knew why.

She was afraid to trust and get too close like she had with that other guy. He would just have to take things slow with her. Trust was earned and easily broken. Once gone, it was almost impossible to get back.

“I have a tail on Viktor, and our team lead is monitoring the airport for Diego’s arrival.”

“Viktor will be over for dinner tonight. I’ll talk to him about the details for the meeting. Hopefully, he’ll tell us when Diego should be showing up.”

“If he’s not already here.” If no one was looking for him, Diego could easily have slipped past security and no one would be the wiser.

“I don’t have a good feeling about this,” Zoe said, voicing his thoughts.

“Nor do I, but there’s nothing we can do about it other than be prepared. I talked to my team after I left you last night. We were thinking if we, as in you, suggested the meet spot, we could be in more control.”

“Makes sense. Have your people found a location?”

“My team lead texted me before I came to the mansion. He and his girlfriend found a warehouse just out of town that has potential. It won’t cause civilian casualties if there is a problem. There are good vantage points. We’re going to check it out later.”

“Okay, after dinner I’ll meet up with you at my house and tell you what I’ve learned. Hopefully, by then, we’ll have a day and time.”

“Please be careful. I don’t trust Viktor.”

Zoe smiled. It was sweet he was worried about her, but it was unnecessary. This was what she did for a living. “I can manage Viktor.”

“I know you can. You are one of the strongest women I know.”

“You know flattery will get you nowhere with me.” Usually, that was her motto, but Greg’s flattery might get him everywhere.

“It’s not flattery; it’s the truth.”

Zoe’s cheeks heated. “Just focus on the road.”

“As you wish.”
