He became concerned when after a moment there still wasn’t a response. He tried the door to find it locked. That wasn’t going to deter him. He pulled out a kit he always kept stored on his person for such an occasion. He had the door opened in seconds. The room was pitch black. Even the curtains were drawn. He knew before entering that Zoe was gone. Just a feeling in his bones. His spidey-senses as Zoe would call it.
So he wasn’t surprised when he turned on the light to an empty room. He checked the bathroom just to be sure and found the window open. Sneaky girl. Good thing he knew how to find her.
Chapter 11
Zoe ignored her phone as she finished washing the conditioner from her hair. She knew who it was, and they could wait. Or just keep calling until she answered. Right now she wanted some alone time. Time to clear her head. She couldn’t do that in Maxim’s mansion with guards hovering around her. And she couldn’t do that with her phone ringing nonstop. She really couldn’t catch a break.
It might seem childish to some to sneak out, but Maxim could be suffocating. She also didn’t want to be around to hear Logan’s screams as they tortured and probably killed him for endangering her. Even if he hadn’t been at fault.
She shouldn’t care about him. He was just a driver. Another person in Maxim’s employ. Yet, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. The way he’d stood head tall as he’d faced Maxim and his wrath. Or the way he’d protected her. Snapping that man’s neck who’d threatened to shoot her.
Violence shouldn’t be a turn on, but with him, she didn’t care. She was drawn to him. No matter how much she wanted to deny it. Even when he annoyed her with his probing questions and his observant eyes.
That was even more reason to keep her distance from him. She didn’t need the two agents to blow her cover; Logan could do that just as easily. She needed to get him reassigned if he survived tonight and get Aleksei back. His main concern was always men. He was easier to dupe.
Her phone started ringing again. Zoe sighed. She might as well get this over with. She turned off the water and wrapped a towel around her body before answering.
“What?”
“Why didn’t you answer me earlier?” a male voice barked.
“I was busy.”
“You were ignoring me.”
She couldn’t deny it. “That didn’t stop you from calling me five times in a row.”
“We need to talk.”
Zoe shifted the phone to her shoulder and grabbed another towel to pat dry her hair. “We talked earlier.” At the boutique.
“About that shitshow earlier.”
“I agree. Your men were way too close and almost blew everything.” Logan had noticed her tail. He’d even realized that she knew who they were. The man was far too observant. It was going to make sneaking around a lot harder if he survived Maxim.
“You were in danger.”
“I had the situation under control.” More or less.
“You were kidnapped in broad daylight on a public street.”
“People get kidnapped all the time.”
“Not my best agents. I’m pulling you out. Things have gotten too dangerous.”
“No,” she snapped back as she moved into the kitchen, pulled down a bottle of scotch from the cupboard, and poured two fingers’ worth into a glass. “I’ve worked too hard to get where I am to just quit.”
“Zoe—”
“Viktor made an unannounced arrival in town. He’s arranging a meeting with Diego Fuentes. This is our chance, boss, to take down three major drug suppliers in one go. We’re not going to get another chance like this.”
“Shit, I don’t like this.” His voice had turned more thoughtful as if he were seeing the merit of keeping her in. She needed this break; he couldn’t pull her out now. Not when she was so close.
“You don’t have to like it. You just have to trust me. In the next few days, everything will be over. Everyone will be behind bars, and we can move on to the next target.”
“You’re taking unnecessary risks.”
“Higher the risk, higher the reward.”
