“Sykes,” Pete didn’t confirm or deny. He was done talking. Greg could see it in his eyes. Knowing he wasn’t going to get any more answers from him Greg released him and stepped back. Pete straightened his shirt as if he hadn’t just been chased down and threatened. “You know he’ll kill you. Sykes isn’t the type of person to leave loose ends.”

Pete gave him a cocky grin. “He’ll have to catch me first. Good luck, my friend.” Pete walked casually down the street as if he didn’t have a care in the world. Greg watched him for a moment, this was probably the last time he’d be seeing Pete. Either Sykes would have him killed or Pete would leave town.

Greg stuffed his hands in his pockets and made his way back to his car. Drew wasn’t going to like this. If Sykes paid Pete to give them false information that meant he must have knownthey had been at the club or had Shay. In either case, it wasn’t good. He needed to warn Drew.

Chapter 27

Shay sat up in bed looking down at a sleeping Drew. By all means she should be sleepy as well. Drew had exhausted her, but her mind refused to quiet. She had to find Sykes. He was the key to everything. To finding her kidnapper. To her freedom.

She glanced over at the clock. It wasn’t even nine o’clock. Everyone had left about an hour ago. She’d taken a long enough break.

Feeling lazy just sitting in bed Shay got out of bed. She dressed and went back to the dining room. She was missing something. Something simple to find Sykes.

“Where are you?” she whispered out loud.

The list of properties in the Las Vegas area was staggering. The odds of finding him seemed dire but she had to try. She wanted to help Drew and his team. For the first time her life she felt needed and valued. These men had risked their lives for her. Barry had been shot because of her.

Drew had told her it all didn’t fall on her shoulders, but she felt some responsibility. It was because of her they were involved. She’d climbed into Drew’s car. Had told him and his team what happened to her it. They could have walked away and left her at the mercy of her father, but they protected her. The very least she could do was help them find Sykes.

As much as she loved spending time with Drew, she didn’t want to be a prisoner in a house forever. She’d done enough of that in her life. While Drew gave her more freedom than her dad, she was still a prisoner within these walls—it was for her protection—but she still hated it. The sooner she found Sykes who could lead her to her kidnapper the better.

Shay checked the list of names from the roster against those on the property list. She could cross those off. Sykes wasn’t going to use one of their names. It didn’t help dwindle the list by much but it was something.

She pulled up a list of properties owned by Flamkeyes Industrial. There were only two. The property the guys had been set upon and a warehouse. Could it be the warehouse she’d been held at?

Shay didn’t remember much about the place or its location. It couldn’t be a coincidence though that Sykes owned both properties. The warehouse was also only a few miles from where she’d been taken.

Shay pulled up the warehouse records to see if any names were listed. The name listed as the owner was Hemman James. There wasn’t any mention of the name on the employee roster. Who was he?

Shay did all the digging on them as she could. After several minutes she fell back in her seat. Shay looked and rechecked just to be sure. “Oh my god.” She whispered to herself. She found him. She found out where they were hiding. At least she was pretty certain of it.

A movement out of the corner of her eye had her looking up to see Drew coming into the room. His hair was tussled from their earlier lovemaking. He had a new dark blue shirt on and grey pajama pants. His bare feet poked out from the pant bottoms. He looked so at home and relaxed. It was a rare sight to see.

His eyes immediately sought hers and he smiled. “I might have known I’d find you here.” Shay returned it, excited to share with him the news.

“I have something to show you.” She practically bounced up and down her seat she was so excited to show him.

His eyes lit up as he came toward her only to freeze. Drew’s smile dropped and his head turned toward the living room window.

“What is it?” Shay asked. Her own eyes darting to the window. The curtains were still open and they could see straight out into the street. What did he see out there? Had he heard something?

“Get down.” Drew commanded as he made his way toward the living room. He peered out the window, making sure to keep out of its direct line of sight and only peaked around the corner. He reached into his pant pocket and cursed.

Shay crouched down on the floor behind the dining room table. She snatched the tablet in her hands and closed the screen before tucking it in the corner of the room. She wanted to protect the information, and in case she was taken it could help lead Drew to her.

Shay’s hands shook and her heart beat erratically as she waited to see what would happen. Drew was her only protection between her and who stood outside. She crab walked into the kitchen and grabbed one of the kitchen knives before hiding back behind the table. She would never be defenseless again.

“Shay, get to my bedroom and get my phone. Dial two. Go now.” He said never taking his focus off the window.

Before she could take a step, the power went out then the front door imploded. A small scream tore from her throat and she ducked behind the chair and watched in horror as three men came through the door single file. They were covered head to toe in black. Their faces were covered in ski masks with goggles over their eyes. A body vest covered their chests.

They’d been so intent on coming in no one saw Drew pressed against the wall between the door and the window. As soon as the last one entered Drew came up behind him and snapped his neck.

Shay knew she should be horrified that he’d just killed a man in a blink of an eye, but these were people intent on killing them. Or killing Drew and taking her captive again. Right now it was survival of the fittest.

Drew slowly lowered the body to the ground, pulling a knife from the person’s vest. With an easy stealth she wouldn’t have believed if she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes Drew came up to the next person in line. He clamped a hand over their mouth and dragged the blade across their throat before a sound could emerge.

Somehow though those that remained heard it. They both spun around to face Drew. He faced them with a calm collection. They raised their weapons. Shay thought she was about to witness Drew’s murder and there was nothing she could do when he threw the knife hitting the leader high in the shoulder. The momentum spun his body around and fell to the ground with a groan. Not wasting a second, Drew charged after the last man standing.
