He glanced up at her seeing her just sitting there staring down at her plate. “Eat up, you want to keep up your strength.”

“I’m done.” In more ways than one. “May I borrow your phone?”

“Why?” He looked at her skeptically.

It wasn’t any of his business who she called. “To make a call or am I now a prison and not allowed even that courtesy?” She challenged.

“Who are you calling?” He asked instead of answering.

“Jack,”

Shay didn’t think it was possible but Drew seemed to grow reminding her of the Hulk. His shoulders and chest expanded. His eyes turned hard and unyielding. His body seemed to shake in rage. “What the hell do you need to be calling him for?” His voice shook like he was fighting for control. For some reason she didn’t fear him harming her. He was a lot of things but woman abuser wasn’t one of them.

“Because I’m going to stay with him. At least there I’ll be wanted.” Shay inwardly cursed. She hadn’t meant for that last part to slip out.

“Wanted,” The words came out in a half whisper. His eyes widened in disbelief. “You think I don’t want you.”

She felt like there was a double meaning to those words but she wouldn’t allow herself to be swayed now. Drew had made it more than obvious he didn’t want her around. He’d prefer she stayed the quiet little mouse of a woman who hid in her room and left him alone. She didn’t want to be that woman anymore.

She felt most comfortable with him but now she didn’t want to even look at him.

“No, I don’t.” She stood up with her plate and headed for the kitchen. She’d clean up dinner and pack her few meager belongings.

Drew reached out and snatched her wrist before she could pass him. It wasn’t painful but it was viselike. She wasn’t going anywhere until he wanted to let her go.

He pushed back from the table and stood never releasing his grip on her wrist. With his free hand he took her plate and set it on the table. He stared intently into her eyes, but she refused to succumb this time. She was too hurt and angry.

“Let me go.” She said calmly. Trying to pull her hand free would only end up hurting herself.

“No,” His voice rumbled from deep in his chest.

One word. With such finality. No compromise. No yielding.

She saw the raw determination in his eyes. He wasn’t going to just let her go. She had to make understand.

“I think it’s best for everyone that I go.”

“To Jack,” His voice was deep and rich reminding her of chocolate and caramel.

“Yes,” His thumb rubbed along her pulse point making her shudder at the butterfly touch. She couldn’t allow herself to be distracted, no matter how tempting.

“But you chose to stay with me.” She had, a sick twisted part of her still wanted to stay with him. To learn about this man that fascinated and tormented her at the same time. But you couldn’t fly close to the sun without getting burned. And Drew didn’t want her close. He wanted her far away.

“It’s obvious you don’t want me here.”

“Don’t want? You keep saying that.” He shook his head in denial.

“Because it’s true.” She argued. “You started pushing me away at your office. Got mad at me for asking questions.” She cursed her weakness for this man. Cursed the pull between them. “I should have picked Jack then but with you I feel the safest. It was you I wanted to be with. It was you—” Drew didn’t let her get another word out as his head swooped down and stole a kiss.

Just as she felt her defenses melt like ice cream in summer he pulled away. His free hand clasped behind the back of her neck possessively.

His eyes bore into hers. For once she could read him and only one word came to mind. Desire. They shone as brightly as the stars on a moonlit night. “I want you. I’ve wanted you since the moment I saw you. I want you every moment of the day.” He kissed her cheeks, her jaw.

She was finding it harder and harder to resist him. To remember that she wanted to leave. Then his lips found her earlobe and pulled eliciting a groan from deep in her throat. It sent little shock waves straight to her core soaking and ruining her panties.

“But—” He silenced her protest once again. His tongue pressed against the seam of her lips insistently. She openedeagerly for him. Their tongues danced and dueled. Both giving and taking.

With her one free hand she wrapped it around the back of his neck and pulled him closer. Wanting to close the distance between them.
