“No, I haven’t gone out in a while.” Not unless she counted her dad’s work functions or charity events.
“Living on campus I’m sure you go to some parties.”
Shay shook her head sadly. “I don’t live on campus. I live at my dad’s house.”
“Why?” He asked baffled. “Isn’t that part of the whole college experience?”
For normal people yes, for her, not so much. “My dad didn’t want me living on campus and risk getting caught up with the wrong people and cause a scandal for him. I tried to convince him to let me at least live in my own apartment but he thought it was a waste of money to pay for two places.” It had been a lame excuse to keep his control on her. The man owned several properties.
“It doesn’t mean I didn’t still sneak out every once and a while with some friends.” She didn’t want him to think she was a complete stick in the mud.
Shay shifted her weight to one side, popping her hip out toward him. She’d never been good at the flirty game, but they’d had great chemistry last night. It couldn’t be that hard.
Drew’s gaze dropped to her feet. She’d ditched the heels again and was barefoot. Her pink manicured toenails poking out from under the sweatpants he’d loaned her.
She’d have to order some clothes today if she was going to remain in hiding. The only clothes she had were the ones she was wearing. As much as she liked wearing Drew’s clothes, she wanted to wear her own. To be able to change her underwear and bra. Maybe order something a little sexier.
Who was this woman she was turning into? Thinking about wearing sexer clothes. Last night had been the most scandalous thing she’d ever worn. Normally it was knee length skirts and blouses.
“So you said you do protection and extractions.” She didn’t want to talk about school. She’d rather learn more about him.
Drew’s body tensed at her question. The man hated questions she was coming to realize. She loved them. How else was she to learn anything? “Yes,”
“How long have you been doing that?” She tucked a stray hair behind her ear, her elbow brushing against his arm. Drew shifted to the side further away from her. That wasn’t the reaction she was expecting.
Its not like she expected him to push the food away and take her right there on the counter, but she remembered the attraction last night. The pull between them. She’d seen the look of lust in his eyes had felt the evidence pressed against her core as they’d danced.
She had apologized for not trusting him, even explained why. Had cleaned up his wound. Bygones should be bygones.
“A while.”
“Years? Months?” She kept pushing. Trying to get answers out of him was like getting water out of a stone.
Drew scowled at her but it didn’t faze her. He didn’t scare her. At least not anymore. “Years.”
“Do you work for a private company or the government?” Whoever it was paid well to afford this kind of equipment.
“Do you always ask so many questions?” He asked instead.
His tone wasn’t harsh but she felt scolded, nonetheless. Like a slap in the face. “Sorry, a horrible habit I’ve been told by some.” The guy kept himself more guarded than Fort Knox. She’d only been making conversation. Trying to get to know him.
Drew sighed heavily, taking a step back. She thought he was going to walk away but he stood there. “Don’t apologize for being inquisitive. I’m just not used to being asked so many questions.”
Shay kept her focus on stirring the soup. She could feel his gaze boring into her. Willing to look at him and accepthis backward way of apologizing. She’d know he was a private person, she’d pushed him too hard. Shay had learned that lesson with her father more than once.
He’d never one physical struck her, but his words could hurt worse than a hand ever would. “That’s a lot of sandwiches for us.” She said instead trying to keep her voice pleasant and upbeat like she didn’t have a care in the world. He’d made at least a dozen. “I’m hungry but I don’t think I can eat all of that.”
“I made extra for the guys. They’ll complain if we eat and didn’t make any for them.”
“Oh,” That made sense. “I’ll make more soup.”
“Don’t worry about. They’ll be fine with this.”
Shay had to bite her lip before she tried to ask more questions. Drew had made it more than clear he didn’t want to answer questions and he didn’t like her. What was between them had been fleeting. It was just as well. She’d be going back to her life soon enough.
The smell of food was making her stomach growl and her throat felt parched. Not wanting to further annoy Drew she left the soup to search through the cupboards.
“What are you looking for?” He asked after she opened and closed three of them.
